I'm trying to find a family in 1891 - they're 1901 details are: James Dudman; abt 1856; Worplesdon, Surrey; Head; Holy Trinity Surrey Emma Dudman; abt 1857; Merrow, Surrey; Wife; Holy Trinity Surrey Rose Dudman; abt 1885; Stoke; Guildford, Surrey; Daughter; Holy Trinity Surrey (possibly born as Rosa Etty) Maud Dudman; abt 1887; Stoke; Guildford, Surrey; Daughter; Holy Trinity Surrey (possibly Alice Maud) Grace Dudman; abt 1889; Stoke; Guildford, Surrey; Daughter; Holy Trinity Surrey Walter Dudman; abt 1895; Worplesdon, Surrey; Son; Holy Trinity Surrey James and Emma married in 1877 so there might be more children than the 3 above who would have been born in 1891. I can't find them on the 1881 census either!!! I am hoping this may lead me to find my Great Grandmother Mary Jane Dudman who I also cannot find on the 1891 census - she was born in Guildford in 1881 (registered 1882). Any help would be greatfully received! Thanks

Hi Well All I can say is WHERE ON EARTH ARE THEY?????? lol I have searched & Searched even looked without the Surname but I still having probs.....I have found some of the Childrens Births But I assume you have these.... I will keep on looking they HAVE got to be somewhere... I just wanted you to know so at least you dont think people are ignoring your request. lesley :~)

Thanks! I've searched and searched too but can find nothing for any of them in 1891!! I just thought I might have missed something as I haven't been doing this long! I found the births for the children which is where I got the alternative names from - thanks. Would there be a reason why they wouldn't be on the census at all? If they were out or maybe the page just was missed out somewhere along the line? It's very frustrating!!!

Are Emmas parents Abraham and Sarah Cannon? This image is worth a look on 1891because I think that Elizabeth is a Dudman. The whole family are mistranscribed. Thanks Mel. Yes Sarah and Abraham Cannon are Emma's parents! I found the family in 1891 with Elizabeth Dudman by trawling through records - as I knew that they lived at the same place in 1881 and 1901. It is odd that she seems to be Elizabeth Mercer in 1881 though. I didn't realise how badly it was transcribed though! The family I'mlooking for could be under any name!!! It's all very confusing!! Bev - yes that's my Great Grandmother in 1901 - also listed as working at that hotel is James Harwood who's my Great Grandfather! :) I can't for the life of me find her in 1891 though!

Just an update on this! Still can't find them on the 1891 or 1881 cnesus. My parents did speak to my Great Aunt (Mary Dudman's daughter) she confirmed that James Dudman and Emma Cannon were Mary's parents and that she had 4 sisters and 3 brothers including Elizabeth, Rose, Grace, Maud, William and James. So pleased to know that I have been researching the right people and my hunch that they were Mary's family was correct! I know where they lived when Mary was born in 1881 (Stoughton Lane in Stoke Guildford) so have looked that road up on the census but they're not listed as living there - so still a mystery as to where the family was in 1881 and 1891!!

Hi Melanie I`ve found Mary Jane and her parents on the 1891 census. James Dudman age35 Labourer born in Stoke Surrey. Emma Dudman age 34 Wife Born in Messon Surrey Mary J. Dudman age 9 Dau Born in Stoke Surrey. Thomas Dudman age 7 son born in Stoke. Rosetta Dudman age 6 daug born in Stoke. Alice M. Dudman age 4 daug born in Stoke. Louise G. Dudman age 1 daug born in Stoke. Ther address looks like Stroughton Terrace Stoke The registration dist is Guilford. Messon is the nearest translations I can come up with as the writing is very poor on the census. Hope this helps. Eileen

Hi again I found them on 1837online. Are these James parents on the 1881 census ? Thomas Dudman age 50 and Elizabeth age 51 Both born in Guilford and living at Bell Fields ? Thomas was down as a funeral labourer. Eileen

Thanks Eileen I'll have a look on there - I can't find them at all on Ancestry even when looking at the address!! I found Elizabeth and Thomas on the 1881 census but can't find James and Emma on that one. Just looked on 1837 online and found the record but I can't look as I'm not a paying member - I just don't understand why I can't find them on Ancestry! :-|

Hi Melanie You probebly can`t find them on Ancestry because the surname is almost illegible and really hard to transcribe. I am having difficulties getting on to 1837online at the moment, but when I do I will find a name on the same census page that you can try and you will find your family at the top. Eileen

Thanks Eileen! I've looked through the images for the road on Ancestry and they are really hard to read - I coudln't see them but I could barely make out most of them so could have easily missed them!!! Thanks for your help it's really appreciated. :)

Hi Melanie The ref no you need for the census for 1891 is RG12 559 folio37 page 36. Your family are at the top of the page, you wouldn`t think that name was supposed to be Dudman. Hope this helps. Eileen

Thanks but I put that into Ancestry and it comes up saying no matches even if I delete the page number. I guess it must be missing from Ancestry or something. Thanks for your help anyway!
