Ann Tudsbury born 1814 Edwinstowe had an older brother i have now found born 9th January in Edwinstowe.=another Richard who was a cabinet maker (and married another Anne) In 1881 he can be seen aged 68 with his son Walter Albert Tudsbury (the watercolourist) . So Ann Tudsbury -my gt,gt,gt grandmother was the cousin of the Tudsbury Quartet Walter,Fred,Richard and Annie.

WALTER TUDSBURY died in 1936,at the age of 86 and was the son of a cabinet maker and had 2 brothers Richard and Fred, and one sister annie.Apparently the Church register (st marys) reveals records of the ancestors of this family dating back to 1600,and they lived their whole lives in the Village.I have a watercolour that he did of Sherwood Forest. RICHARD ,who died in 1908 was famous for his woodcarvings and won awards at the Paris Exhibition in 1870.Carvings he did for Edward V11 brought him a personal letter of appreciation from the king. FRED was also a talented wood carver and when he died in 1933,left many reminders of his skill, including the eagle lectern in St marys Church,Edwinstowe.many of the carved pew ends in Perlthorpe Church are his work. His finest work was perhaps the grand staircase in Rufford Abbey.fred was a musician and made his own violin. He was also a skilled electrician and built machines which were accepted by manufacturing firms. WALTER gave art exhibitions and apparently did very life-like models of animals in snow !! Apparently the sister ANNIE was still reciting Shakespeare perfectly just before she died at the age of 90 in 1941.!! When they were all young they built a model steam engine, correct in every detail, which they ran between Edwinstowe and Clipstone Arches. Paraphrased from the Mansfield Reporter.

ive realise that since writing that !!!.....was late lol ! but what is bizarre is that he is the only one that uses the name- not knowing his mothers maiden name is the problem- Im convinced she is the link somehow. William John and Joseph dont use it -- was it the result of knowing something after joseph died ?(his father in the census)

Pippa Report 7 May 2006 16:35

If you think Richard is the first born who are Elizabeth and William then in the 1841 census?

In 1861 he is a groom in Weston, aged 21 working for a family called Spence who have a fair few servants. 2 years later he marries an Elizabeth-well it turns out that he uses the Tudsbury name for the first time.........at marriage ! Surname First name(s) District Vol Page -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages Sep 1863 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Newton Richard Tudsbury Mansfield 7b 97 Witham Eliza Mansfield 7b 97 and later settles in Mansfield Woodhouse by 1871 as a coachman with 3 children,Annie(named afterhis mum) thomas and william......interesting no joseph......which may suggest again that joseph newton wasnt his birthfather. This also makes sense when you consider that Joseph newton down as his father in previous censi had died young-its very possible that she chose to tell him after he died.Richards mother was a widow before the marriage in 1863.

what i need to find is how my Richard Newton, who later named himself Richard Tudsbury Newton, born 1840 is related to this family- I suspect it is through his mother Ann,who was the only member of the family born in the village....the similar names and years of birth can get confusing......... Richard Tudsbury born Edwinstowe -1840 -later woodcarver-lived Edwinstowe. Richard Newton-later Richard Tudsbury Newton-born Ollerton 1840- my gt gt grandmothers brother.-lived Ollerton>>Mansfield>>Pleasleyhill>>>Gainsboro.Innkeeper and Grocer. The link is Edwinstowe,as this is Ann Newtons birthplace, and his father joseph was born in Lincoln,so that rules him out.

AAAhh,now that last one is the talented family -I was on about-the wood carver....2 of the brothers carved wood -they had a brother called fred ,and a sister ,their father was a painter/watercolourist-was obsessed with Sherwood Forest. The description of the sister as a housekeeper is unfair-apparently she lived to a ripe old age and could speak many languages.Fred was a sort of Heath Robinson inventor. The wood carvers won commisions from the King and exhibited in Paris. Ive seen photographs of manor hose staircases that they did,and cabinets with carved rabbits and pheasants adorning some large estate house-the Cabinet was a price guide of 60,000 pounds in the auction catalogue.A truly talented ,if not nutty family-they were all happy to live together and were always busy. One earlier piece has been mistranscribed-the Gun Newton is Ann Newton-she is my gt,gt,gt grandmother.

Don't get too excited yet Alter. I lived in Edwinstowe when I was 18 months old as we lived with my Aunt for 6 months. I hope for your sake you are not related to me but maybe you are descended from Robin Hood?

He used the name Richard Tudsbury Newton in both his marriages in 1863 and 1884.........do you think it is from his mother that this name originates?....seeing as she was born in the village that the Tudsburys became famous -edwinstowe?
