Hi Angela, I was going to look today what the middle names of hughs siblings were, im glad you came up with griffin tudor, i wondered if that was his name couldnt read it properly. the hugh humphreys that live next door is carolines dad, i guess they named my hugh after his grandad. im still trying to find hugh junior in 1901, his son donald ( hubbys grandad) was visiting his grandmother in 1901 i cant find a may or hugh anywhere, rumour inthe family was that she died as donald was brought up by his grandmother (mays mother) sarah exton but i have searched the death index from 1900 to 1909 and only found 3 may evans death but only one is in wales.

Hi Judith, thank you, i just googled the weslyan insurance society and didnt find any answers, then i googled it again and took the insurance bit out and came up with 2 links for a weslyan society so i am looking at the right family then?? they have given me night mares the last couple of months

Judith

Judith Report 10 May 2006 19:12

The Wesleyan was an insurance society - my parents took out a policy for me with them when I was a child - I think it was a 'friendly society' linked to the Wesleyan methodist church

Karen

Karen Report 10 May 2006 19:05

yes it was, so that super thingy wotsit isnt an insurance company then like i thought lol looks like it was at the Old Blaina Chapel in the district of bedwellty I dont know when they changed to catholics though cos hubbys mum was a catholic (her dad was donald Archer evans son of hugh and may) unless it was on MIL`s mums side

Merry

Merry Report 10 May 2006 18:58

So he was a Wesleyan Methodist Evangelist??? Sounds reasonable! Was the weddding a methodist one? Merry

Karen

Karen Report 10 May 2006 18:55

Hi Kate, mary and Merry, Sorry i havent replied until now, Hugh and may got married 9th march 1899 at bedwelty, Hughs parents are samuel evans and caroline davey humphreys evans, god wot a mouthful lo,l i believe hugh was named after carolines dad hugh humphreys, the davey bit is from hugh seniors father inlaw he was george davey, only problem is now in 1901 samuel`s occupation is super weslyn insurance society and yet on marriage cert in 1899 he was an evagelist

Kate

Kate Report 10 May 2006 16:22

And I know this is getting a bit tenuous, but if the above two are him, this COULD be his parents' marriage?: Marriages Jun 1874 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- EVANS Samuel Carnarvon 11b 802 Humphreys Caroline Davey Carnarvon 11b 802 Jones Hugh Carnarvon 11b 802 Roberts Jannet Carnarvon 11b 802 Especially if that 'D' in the birth registration stands for Davey! But we need you to confirm if the Hugh marriage above is the right one before trying to go any further by looking for these people on censuses etc. (Though the fact that the marriage took place a full year before the birth of the child certainly suggests the parents were seriously religious!) Kate.

Kate

Kate Report 10 May 2006 16:17

.... because if it is, then this birth would fit in with his age at marriage (don't know about that 'D' in the middle, though...) Births Jun 1875 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Evans Hugh Humphreys D Carnarvon 11b 517 Kate.

Kate

Kate Report 10 May 2006 16:16

Is this Hugh's marriage, or am I barking up the wrong tree? Marriages Mar 1899 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Evans Hugh Humpheys Bedwelty 11a 137 Evans Hugh Humphreys Bedwelty 11a 137 GAGE Charles Holbro Bedwelty 11a 137 Jones Clara Emily Bedwelty 11a 137 Meredith May Bedwelty 11a 137 Kate.

This might be Samuel and family in 1881: Samuel Evans abt 1858 Abertillery, Monmouth, Wales Head Aberystruth Monmouthshire Elizabeth Evans abt 1857 Abertillery, Monmouth, Wales Wife Aberystruth Monmouthshire James Evans abt 1876 Abertillery, Monmouth, Wales Son Aberystruth Monmouthshire Sarah Ann Evans abt 1878 Abertillery, Monmouth, Wales Daughter Aberystruth Monmouthshire Silver Evans abt 1880 Abertillery, Monmouth, Wales Daughter Aberystruth Monmouthshire But no Hugh, and Samuel's an iron worker.

Merry

Merry Report 10 May 2006 13:56

You didn't say the date of the marriage (when he was 23) Merry

Karen

Karen Report 10 May 2006 13:31

you would think it would be easy to find a preacher by the name of samuel evans with a son called hugh humphreys evans that was a dramatic artiste but no, cant find them anywhere doesnt help that i have no idea where either of them were born. Hughs age at the time of marriage was 23 and he lived at Back (something )Oak Street, Abertillery monmouthshire
