I haven't spent too much time with one branch in Essex as I don't know anything about the family. Martha was born c1801 and married in 1822 - is there some place that I can search records, looking for her family members, please? Thank you, Lisa (Of course, I do know her last name.) :)

Did she live long enough to have a place of birth on the census (1851)? Merry

Hi Merry. Yes, she did. I believe someone was kind enough to look on the 1851 (and 1841) -- I'll check now to see what it says. I do know her last name from the marriage certificate; but that's about all I know.

Hi Reg and Jeanette. Thank you and Merry for replying. I've checked the IGI and it confirms that she was born c1801, but I'm not sure how to go about looking for her parents.

If it was an extracted baptism entry on the IGI then it should show her parents! If it's a submitted birth entry with no further info then it isn't really worth anything :o(( Who is she? And where was she born? Merry

Merry, her name is Martha Grange and she married my brickwall ancestor, James Mumford. I received a copy of their marriage certificate from their church and it says 'of this parish' (Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex). I found the 1841 and she is listed, but no place of birth -- does say she's age 40. Can't locate the 1851; but I believe someone did find it for me. PS The information that someone gave me includes 'born in county'.

martha may have been born at Hatfield Broad Oak, Essex, but equally, she may not. it's onlly where she was residing at the date of the marriage (and for the previous three weeks if the marriage was by banns) That's why you need the 1851 census for her place of birth! Merry

Is this her? 1851: William Lawes abt 1821 Apewick, Suffolk, England Visitor Fyfield Essex Louisa Munford abt 1831 Hatfield Kra, Essex, England Daughter Fyfield Essex Martha Munford abt 1798 Hatfield Kra, Essex, England Head Fyfield Essex Mary Ann Munford abt 1826 Hatfield Kra, Essex, England Daughter Fyfield Essex William Munford abt 1834 Hatfield Kra, Essex, England Son Fyfield Essex The actual page says Hatfield B O (not Kra!) for place of birth, so obviously that IS Hatfield Broad Oak! Merry, does it really say the 'town' of birth? If so, I don't believe I've ever asked for a lookup. Will go through my records to see if I can find a copy of it. Thank you. :)

Merry Report 18 Jun 2006 21:38

Can you get to an LDS centre? You could hire out the Hatfield Broad Oak films and look for a baptism for her. Merry

1841 shows Born in This County (or not!) - ie born in the county where you live, or not. Also has ages rounded down to the nearest 5 years in 1841. 1851 onwards has place of birth (usually the parish if a small place) and so-called ''exact'' age! Merry

Thank you SO much!!!! I've never asked for that printout! Yes, that's her children. I did a google search a while ago and she was living in Fyfield at one point; I've wondered if her husband died prior to 1851 and she had to move and get a job. And she had a visitor from Fyfield! Thank you so much for the information, especially confirming her place of birth. PS I was so excited about everything else, I didn't see that they all were living in Fyfield.

Merry, if you're still around, may I ask if you could look on the 1861 census for her please (providing you have access)?

Don't know if you have this.....but it's the most likely death reg for James Mumford: Deaths Sep 1846 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mumford James Ongar 12 136 Fyfield is in Ongar District. Merry

There are three deaths for James Mumford in which I was interested. I was thinking that might be the best one, but hearing that Fyfield is in Ongar, I will definitely order that certificate and will order Martha's. Even if it turns out to not be them, I've only ordered one other certificate from the UK, so it's high time I do so again. (I've ordered all my other certificates from Canada, so might as well support the UK, eh?) :) Thank you so much for all of your help. It is truly appreciated.

I have to go on an errand now, but one question: is ordering Martha's death certificate the place to start looking for her parents? Sorry for such a silly question, but I've not really researched too much 'in' England.

Merry Report 18 Jun 2006 22:28

No! To find her parents you need her baptism. Her parish of birth is not on the IGI. You would need either to order out the parish register film through an LDS family history centre, or maybe try the Essex Lookup Exchange or google to see if the PR's are available anywhere. As a last resort, you could approach the Essex Record office. For a fee they would probably look up an entry for you, but it's best to see the whole film if possible.....then you might spot her siblings and maybe even her parents marriage etc etc! Merry
