Does anyone know of an easy way to get straight to a street on the census without knowing the piece and folio number instead of going right through the parish or just randomly looking at names and hoping you find the right street? I am trying to find Derby Road, Eastwood on the 1891 census. I don't have a surname because I am trying to trace the history of my grandparent's house.

hiya, i dont think you can do an addy search on that census, the ones i know of is 1881, and 1901 julie i dont live too far from eastwood, the houses on derby rd arent that old, there are only a few, one of which is a house called Guilt Brook julie

DH Lawrence's hometown! OK, this is what you do. Choose 1891 on ancestry and select Nottinghamshire. Put Eastwood in the town box. You will get loadsa entries. Pick any entry and click on the image icon. The census page will load. At the top of the screen it will say You are here: Search > Census > UK Census Collection > 1891 England Census > Nottinghamshire > Eastwood > District 7 Click on Eastwood in this message and you will find a screen which gives you two enumeration districts. Click on the View enumeration district for either of them. This will take you to a screen which will give details of the area covered. When you find the one that has your road, remember the order, as this will be the order that appears on the pages. If you go back to the screen giving enumeration districts you can click the left hand icon to bring up the pages in that district. So if you find the road you want is midway in district 6, and there are 20 pages of district six, you can start looking on page 10 and then go through it. Easier to do than to read this! nell

My grandparents lived next door to what I think is now B & Q. I think it used to be co-op dairy. When they lived there it was always no 37 derby road but my mum says it used to be something to do with the police stables being no 3 derby road. Next door , no 1 was called Ellerslie House. I can't find anything out about these places though. I've tried googling.

Ok thanks for that Nell. I'll try that once I've digested it lol My great grandparents knew D H Lawrence's mother. People in eastwood never reckoned much to him probably because he was a bit rude in his books. Thanks for your help everyone. Its really appreciated.

hiya lou, i know b&q well have been there many times, sorry about the gilt brook house was the wrong end of the town, the part where you will need to be looking is Bailey Grove Rd, as i say alot of it now is probably 1950's builds, and there is a LDS church opposite B&Q, well near opposite anyway, you want me to have a look??? Julie

Julie My mum said to look for bailey grove as well. I found it on the 1901 but none of the addresses are numbered (groan). I am trying the 1881 now.

My mum has given me a couple of surnames for neighbours - Pegg and Boon but this was in the 1930's when she was little. I can't see them at the turn of the century.

hiya i dont think that many houses were numbered the further back you go, was all to do with the penny post, which i believ started in 1881 onwards, unless the house had a specific name/or was prominent in some way, i think you may stuggle, i think this is when it happened anyway, i'm sure someone else will correct me if i'm wrong :) the district on 1891 cen is first enumeration one area 6 i think it is Julie, bailey grove is mentioned as well as lanky bill (langley mill) J

Thanks julie. The Langley Mill bit has been confusing me a bit because I never realised it ran into Eastwood. I'm surprised I can't find out anything about the police stables though but it rings true because there is a lot of land at the back and my granddad kept lots of pigeons. You don't know how to go about chasing the history of a house do you?

Darksecretz

Darksecretz Report 21 Jun 2006 21:59

hiya, there is a website out there somewhere, about tracing history of houses, i think it may be 'house detectives' or something similar, try googling it, if you have ever been down that rd, as soon as you get round traffic island at bottom on b&q, you are in langley mill, odd i know, but that is how it is LOL julie

I've searched for Derby Road, Eastwood, Notts on the address search on 1861, 1881, 1891 and 1901 and I can't find it on any of them! (well, 5 households in 1901) Do you have an event happening in that street before 1901? Merry

Unknown Report 21 Jun 2006 22:05

Oh all the time I spent there when I was little and I never once thought to ask about it - like you do lol I suppose I need to look for an old map. I will have to wait untill I can get to nottingham archives office. Whereabouts are you? I've got rellies in Kimberley still. Thanks for looking Sarah. Its one of the main roads in Eastwood so I can't understand why we can't find it lol

Merry

Merry Report 21 Jun 2006 22:15

I've found more of it in 1901 now......there are only five households transcribed as Derby, so goodness knows how they spelled the other part! It's not numbered in 1901 though :o(( If you want to view it in 1901, then look up this chap: Bertram Gibson abt 1880 Bestwood, Nottinghamshire, England Son Eastwood Nottinghamshire He is in the first family in the first house listed, so just click through the pages from there......
