Careful there Merry that's my old home town your talking about, joking aside though it is quite possible. Hopefully the last remaining child of Charles son is going to ring me this week and I may be able to prise some info about her Grandad from her. Not sure what rellie she is to me she is my Grandmothers sister. This is a major stumbling block if the non marriage proves to be correct as I will never know which of 4 possibles he his. Thnkyou once more for your input.

Luton - a den of iniquity!! I have a couple of batches of rellies who lived in Luton and they were all up to no good!!! Bigamy Adultery Children being passed off as the babies of long-dec'd husbands Do you think maybe Charles was already married? (might explain why he never gave the same details twice) - was probably thinking the census enumerator was really someone employed by his real wife to track him down?!! Merry

As requested Merry. RG 10 1573 Duke Street. The Welcome Stranger Lodging House.Luton Beds. Charles Clifton Father Mar 39 Chimney Sweep. Oxfordshire Biscester Jane Wife Mar 35 Servant, Radnorshire New Radnor Sarah Daugh 1 Oxfordshire Watlington. If you have been following my recent communications regarding Charles ignore his place of birth as he is not sure where he came from. PS just come back from family Relatives no joy there either. Also Jane Smith with a Charles in the London area in 1871 does not seem to be there although there were alot of them, and I have not looked elsewhere for them with no ages it could be like a needle in a haystack. Thanks for your time.

Please could you post the details of your couple in 1871? Merry

Thankyou again Merry I will go and have a look to see if I can find them.

Merry Report 26 Jun 2006 21:46

I never use it to trawl for anything! Only as a last resort...... It's very good (quick) for looking for births 1911 Q3 through to 1920 when the mum's maiden name is on the index.....You can do the whole 9 years in one click (as long as the names are not Smith and Jones!) Merry

Sorry Merry, I did not intend anyone to spend money just wondered if other people knew where to get the extra info so I could go look myself. A special big thankyou in that case as when you left the info above I did not realise you had paid for it. I am looking for Charles Clifton marrying Jane Griffiths. between 1861 and 1871. I have trawled the images on ancestry. searched Free BMD and ancestry and this is the closest I have got, it was just with the fourth name missing on both sites I wonndered how to find the fourth or if it was possible. I must admit I have not used family relatives as it appeared to work out very expensive when you are trawling. Is that the case? or a misconception on my part.

So....do you know what the right name would be???? if you do, then you could have checked the name on the GRO index and saved me the lookup!!! (Don't get me wrong.....I wanted to see how Family Relatives coped with the request and so truly didn't mind paying for it......I wouldn't have said anything here, but I'm just trying to get across to everyone that if you KNOW the names, you don't have to rely on the transcribed records!!!!!!) Anyway, I may have misunderstood you! If you know what couple you are after, do you want to give us their names and rough place and date you would expect the marriage? LOL Merry

Perranmaid Report 26 Jun 2006 20:59

Thankyou Merry. The other 4th entry is the wrong name. I wonder if charles SMITH was an alias, or genuine? Off to look at 71 census to see if they have disappeared. Thankyou again

Merry

Merry Report 26 Jun 2006 20:57

This is obvious really, but I should have said......(if only for newbies reading!)......If not all the marriage partners are transcribed on FreeBMD or Ancestry's version of the same, but you think you know who the missing person should be, you can look them up for free on the Ancestry GRO index pages. Merry

Merry

Merry Report 26 Jun 2006 20:54

If you use Ancestry copy of FreeBMD and the last entry isn't there, always check the original FreeBMD site next, as they are always a couple of steps ahead of the Ancestry version. However, in this case, FreeBMD has the same three names transcribed as the Ancestry version does.......so..... Try Family Relatives. They can match up all the marriage partners (where the entries are correctly recorded on the indexes, that is!) from 1866 until 1911, after which the spouse surname is recorded. No Surname Forename1 Forename2 Spouse District Page No Event Quarter Year 1 Adams Mary Elizabeth Pancras.1b 216 Marriage 1 1869 2 Griffiths Jane Pancras.1b 216 Marriage 1 1869 3 Short Edgar Pancras.1b 216 Marriage 1 1869 4 Smith Charles Pancras.1b 216 Marriage 1 1869 Merry

It may be difficult to read and so perhaps transcribed to a different page. However there are mistakes on the original index pages. My g grandparents each have completely different page numbers in the index so would never appear in the right set of four! I just sent for the page number with g grandad's name and got the right certificate - obviously there must be other original index errors like this. Anne
