Cellulitis is basically a bacterial infection which causes acute inflammation of the connective tissue of the skin. The infected limb swells, becoming very hot and painful. If not managed it can get into the bloadstream and lymph nodes and become a very serious infection indeed. It can be caused by a streptococcus or staphylococcus bacteria. Now a days it is commonly treated with anti-biotics. Cheers, Bill

I suppose it could if it was infected and he got blood poisoning. When was this? was it before the days of penicillin? Margaret

Was this given as a main cause of death or just a contributing factor? It is much more common if someone is very immobile or has poor circulation. Nowadays it usually clears up after a course of antibiotics but is liable to reaccur. best wishes Anne

thanks for your replies it does also say Cardio respiratory failure so I suppose this was just a contributory thing

I think you are partly right. The Itis just means infection - keep exercising!!! Some G.P.'s seem to add everything anyone has at the time to be on the safe side.

Actually Val, dont scoff, no lesser authority than the Daily Mail echoed my advice on its front page this morning. Apparently 2000 people died in the last heat wave due to de hydration bringing on things like strokes and heart attacks.

thats quite frightening Annie , I am quite lucky I dont get cellulite dont know why, as I am not what you would call slim

You can still suffer from bad cellulitis now, looked after a lady a few years ago who had it, very painful, the bed used to be drenched by the weeping from her legs.......... Barbara..xx

Our nextdoor neighbour had cellulitis which was not diagnosed correctly - because of the mismanagement of his condition, it developed into septicaemia and he was in intensive care for 11 weeks. For the first two weeks they said he would die, but he was very lucky and survived. So you see it can be lifethreatening even today.....never mind before antibiotics etc. Merry

I've had cellulitis in both legs.the left got it more times than the right. You feel VERY feverish & shiver & shake and your leg swells up & itches but is very sore if you try to scratch it.and goes very red. you feel like you have a really bad flu. Its a stapholochocci infection that its potently fatal. if not treated quickly with antibiotics. some people even now have to be hospitalised. So pre antibiotics it was fatal.
