Hi All. Here is a silly question from a 'newbie'. I am trying to get a copy of my grandparents marriage certificate. I was going to apply on the gro website but i don't know the date they married. The info I have is John Brettle m Sarah Ann Steadman @ 1929 in Staffs. But I can't find any record of the marriage on any of the sites I have tried. All help gratefully received. Bren

Brenda Where did you get your year of 1929 from? When was the first child born? Margaret

Sorry I went away, someone at the door... anyway, I got the year from my Dad, his mam died when he was little and he lost touch with his father. dad was born in 1937 and his elder sister was born in 1931 we think. His memory says his parents were married in 1929, but could be wrong! Bren

Brenda Janice has checked 1927-1931. Why dont you have a go at searching the indexes yourself on Ancestry. It is free, you just have to register. http://www.ancestry.*co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx remove * Maybe they married a lot earlier than your dad thinks. Maybe they married after the births of a couple of the kids. Have you checked your dads birth registration to see if his mothers maiden name is correct? Or, perhaps you have his birth cert anyway. Sorry, just thinking aloud. Margaret

Margaret. thanks for your help I will register as advised, I just got a copy of my dads birth cert and his mams name is clearly written, though he had always believed his mam was called florence (this was also his Grans name). there is an address on the birth cert of 6 Scotts Yard Bilston, do you think it is worth looking at this? And how would I do that? Bren

Do you know the name of the elder sister? If so, find her birth entry as a cross-check. What year did your Dad's mother die? Janice

Bren, the only marriage for SARAH A STEADMAN in 1929 is March Qtr 1929 6C 159. When she married SIDNEY A E STEADMAN, same surname in WORCESTER. i couldnt check the GRO INDEX for the DEC QTR due to a fault on the INDEX. TED
