What are their date/places of birth? There should be earlier children - I guess you have no idea of them?

Carole, could you let us have a bit more info re the families they should be with or have you found their families but not them? There are so many with this name we need more direction. The only one I can see at moment is a Frederick William and he is with a family whose head is Thomas. Right just seen your update - both sets of parents have Irish connections? Do you think may be they were in Ireland at that time? Is it both families that you cant find? Who was with William in 1881 if you dont know who dad is? I cant see a Wm born 1871 Hulme on the 1881 - can you copy and paste it on the thread please?

Ok, you said you had found them in 1881 - I couldnt see William in 1881 on ancestry but luckily Glen has found him on the LDS 1881 census - well done Glen - not just a pretty kilt. See the 1881 above with William (just shows you how much may be missing on ancestry, doesnt it)

Glen used familysearch.org - its free for the 1881 census and also for searching parish records for births, marriages and deaths before the 1837 registration. It has been compiled by the Mormon Church and is very useful.

Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 20 Jul 2006 20:27

The family search website, run by the LDS church.. They only have the 1881 census but sometimes when the census is transcribed mistakes do occur, names are mis-spelt etc. Sometimes a name like Lyons could be Lyon,Lion,Line,Sion when the results come up,but spelt correctly on the image. Still looking for something in the '91,will post any result i find. Glen

Carole, because the name can be mistranscribed is why I was asking the names of the rest of the family. If this happens, you can often just enter the details of one member of the family except for the surname. If you get an unusual name to enter, all the better, put in dob and pob and no surname and then see if it comes up mistranscribed. As Glen said L is often mistranscribed as an S and so on. There is also a chance that his dad died between the census and mum remarried and William has been entered under the stepfathers name.

Ref numbers only, and the image is a bit dodgy. The head of the house looks like born in Tipperary 1891 England Census Record about William Lyons Name: William Lyons Age: 20 Estimated birth year: abt 1871 Relation: Nephew Gender: Male Where Born: Manchester, Lancashire, England Civil parish: Crumpsall Ecclesiastical parish: St Thomas Town: Manchester County/Island: Lancashire Country: England Source information: RG12/3265 Registration district: Prestwich Sub registration district: Cheetham ED, institution, or vessel: 14 Folio: 47 Page: 22 (click to see others on page) just heading back to the image now to try and read it. I did plump for that one with the Head of house being Irish born, and Cheetham is as close to Hulme as you can get. The household as transcribed by ancestry,(and i still think it's Tipperary) View Record William Lyons abt 1871 Manchester, Lancashire, England Nephew Crumpsall Lancashire View Record Elizabeth Mc Grath abt 1875 Crumpsall, Lancashire, England Daughter Crumpsall Lancashire View Record Mary Mc Grath abt 1837 Galway, Ireland Wife Crumpsall Lancashire View Record Mary Mc Grath abt 1872 Crumpsall, Lancashire, England Daughter Crumpsall Lancashire View Record Patrick Mc Grath abt 1841 Greathurst Kibperany Head Crumpsall Lancashire Note William is down as nephew, suggesting a possible McGrath/Lyons marriage somewhere?
