I have looked on Ancestry and Familysearch for the marriage of my 2xgreat grandparents, why am I unable to find them??? Kathlyn

Family search is far from complete. Where did you look on Ancestry - if you looked at the freeBMD section then that is also far from complete. You would need to trawl through the complete images on Ancestry, going through quarter by quarter, year by year - presuming of course that they married after 1837. Do you want to give some details - someone might be able to help.

Put up some details such as names, approximate date, and likely place(s) and no doubt you will get some people to help in the search. As for why you can't find them on ancestry or family search - if they married after 1837 then they should turn up somewhere on the GRO indexes (unless they got married in a different country) or at least in the local ones, but if before 1837 then it is probably that the parish where they got married is not transcribed on either of those websites. Family search only holds a very small number of records. Ancestry has all bmd's from 1837...........if you have looked only at the freebmd transcriptions on there, you need to look again at the full records............. Do you have an idea of the year? Reg

Unfortunately, even Ancestry doesn't have all the images available all the time. I used up a lot of time reporting missing marriage index images scattered through the 1940s, for instance. Christine

They were married in Poplar in 1855, she is Amelia Jennings, he is James Hadley. Kathlyn

just looked on 1837 no marriage for a Amelia Jennings for 1855 unless my eyes have gone googly

and the only James Hadley got married in Dudley or Birmingham

Oh, don't forget that 'mother-in-law' could mean 'stepmother', so unless you have a birth certificate of one of James and Amelia's children giving Amelia's name as 'Amelia Hadley, formerly Jennings' then you can't be sure that her maiden name was Jennings. Kate.

If James was married in or before 1855 he would only have been 15 I am thinking he married Amelia as her 2nd husband and the children were given his name, possibly in error. Also note the 5 year gap between children 1862-67

I think James's date of birth may be wrong. I've found James Hadley born 1829 on the 1861 cenus with the three older children and wife's name given as Maller and with Elizabeth Jennings. They are in Bromley. I don't know how to paste the details but the reference is RG9/300 Folio 14 page 23

The oldest child is Medora Amelia Hadley (Dorah on 71) Mar 1855 Poplar 1c 598 I thought the name Medora might be a clue but I haven't found anything yet. I agree that Elizabeth Jennings is probably related to James not Amelia, either mother or step mother. It would be really helpful to know Amelia's maiden name. Also maybe James had another christian name. Or maybe they didn't get married.

Might just be a coincidence but it seems strange that these Hadley families with Wednesbury connections are living in the right parish in 1851. Might be rellies? Kathlyn, it looks as if you will be best to get the birth certificate of one of the children to get Amelia's maiden name and then look for the marriage. Kate.

Hi Kate, Many thanks for all the hard work put in by ALL who have worked on my behalf. Yes I do have a birth cert for one of Amelia and James`s children, and Amelia was nee Jennings. We have found Amelia`s baptism which was at All Saints Poplar on 30th June 1837. Amelia`s parents were both from different part of the country, her father, Henry was from Bristol and her mother Elizabeth from Wednesbury, Staffs. I do think that maybe James and his mother in law Elizabeth may have know each other before his marriage to Amelia, as he also came from Wednesbury. As for the census where a Maller Hadley is shown as being wife to James, I have had many problems with the 'translation' of the census documents. On the other side of my family, I was unable to find anything before 1901 because the surname had been mistranscribed as Mandesley. So, Maller is a mistranscription of Amelia. I am off to work now but I will be back this afternoon. And thanks again ALL of you. Kathlyn
