Allie Sorry, I cant help you find them, but you might like to think about putting sources on your tree entries - yeh, I know, its dead boring, but oh, does it save time in the long run! I speak as one who knows! OC

Gordon Report 8 Aug 2006 21:35

Well, I still can't remember how I established that *this* Thomas Collins who lived with his parents is the same person as *that* Thomas Collins in the next census with a wife and kids... A whisky too many maybe? It'll be somewhere in my records... Gordon

Did it once. Took me ages to retrace, so I religiously record everything. Hard enough for me to do the research once, let alone repeat it all !!!!!! I go have a look for you. Crackin'

The page number for the William Dakin married in Leicester Dec 1850 is incorrect. It should be 184 which means he married one of these ladies: Marriages Dec 1850 BENTLEY Harriet Leicester 15 184 Cook Lucy Leicester 15 184 Gilbert Sarah Leicester 15 184 HIGGINSON Emma Leicester 15 184 I know that doesn't help you. I started out adding sources everywhere. Then I had to pencil in a few things, then I got more bits of paper, then I started to go mad, then, now I am mad. Everything on Legacy has notes. But the bits of paper!!. When I got to a brickwall, I'd go forward onto another child, then they'd marry and I'd have another name. I started with four big divided books. One for each of my parents and same for my husband. I now have about a cubic metre of paper. To think I'm an organised person. I just get onto a new person and get carried away.

Me too Allie!!! I had about 1,000 on my tree before I thought 'oooh, perhaps I should have kept source notes etc'! I've since had to go through zillions of census pages trying to find all my people again, which hasn't necessarily been a bad thing - I've found all kinds of other snippets of info (and family members) that I missed first time around when I was new to genealogy! But as far as genealogy is concerned, I do things that are off the scale of stupidity! Note-keeping aside, I've learnt 2 major lessons: 1. Never assume anything (learnt that one the hard way!) 2. Keep well away from Ancestry/your tree/ LDS etc etc when you are very tired and bleary-eyed! Bev x

Hi Elton! Thanks so much for that info. The second WDakin on the 1851 (Seagrave) is the right one - his wife must have been the MARY HUNT on the marriage index. Still don't know where I found the other Mary (THURLLMAN), but nevermind! Shall make sure I don't do things in such a rush in futrure (some hope). Thanks again Best wishes Allie ps have pm'd you

Allie, I think you need to look for a marriage in Barrow district before 1847 when Thomas Heap Dakin was born. Rose

I often get lost in my Tree. When I joined GR I had about 1,000 names in my Tree, and was pretty sure of where each of them fitted, but now, thanks to a lot of on-line information PLUS an awful lot of work added from trees of distant cousins I have no chance. Often I will just pick on a name, for no particular reason, and wander around through their ancestors for a while then totally fail to get back to them. It often kickstarts me into some Genealogical Activity and I will pursue that branch for a while.

Thanks Jim and Rose I was very 'au fait' with all the names on my tree until recently - it's all got a bit out of hand as I have had quite a bit of success lately with finding people. Just too much information! my brain hurts! Allie
