I have the earliest twig on one of my branches with Thomas C Goble & Charlotte Goble + Kids. Name: Thomas Goble Age: 26 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1845 Relation: Head Spouses's Name: Charlotte Gender: Male Where born: Chelsea, Middlesex, England Civil Parish: Brighton County/Island: Sussex Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: Disability: View image Registration district: Brighton Sub-registration district: St Peter ED, institution, or vessel: 20 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 86 Household Members: Name Age Charlotte Goble 27 James W Goble 1 Mary A Goble 5 Thomas Goble 26 Thomas C Goble 3 I Cleverly Deduced that Chatlotte's maiden name was Cosham. Marriage to a Thomas West Goble Sept 1864 in Brighton Births Mar 1844 COSHAM Charlotte Lewes 7 435 It all fits just perfectly. UNTIL I start looking for Charlotte Cosham pre marriage on the 1851 & 1861 Census' She doesn't exist! There's a lucy Cosham born right time right place but not a Charlotte to be found. I've tried lottie, and charlote I've tried misspelling the last name, I've tried looking at other cosham families in sussex to no avail HELP!! before i go quite mad!

Have you got Thomas and Charlotte´s marriage certificate ? or Charlottes birth certificate ?

Christine

Christine Report 11 Aug 2006 08:55

Looking at registration district for Lewes, this looks like Charlottes place of birth (bit mangled on 1871 census) Southover Without.

Charlotte was often shortened to Lottie could Lottie be mistranscribed as Lucy.

That looks most promising, thankyou. How do you do that so fast I've been looking for three days with no success!

I don't think it's Lucy - England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index: Name: Lucy Cosham Birth: Sep 1844 - Lewes, Sussex, East Sussex 1851 England Census Name: Lucy Cosham Birth: abt 1844 - Ringmer, Sussex, England Residence: 1851 - Southover, Sussex, England (the image does say Lucy) England & Wales, FreeBMD Death Index: Name: Lucy Cosham Birth: abt 1844 Death: Mar 1869 - Lewes, Sussex, East Sussex

Charlottes POB is Lewis on the birth record. and i think it's Southover And a shortened form of Sussex on the 71 Lucy is definately lucy i checked the original. I think the Cotham is the best bet. But she's definately going on the list of certs needed lol

Charlotte Cosham is listed here : name only but it seems you can request further info www.ringmer.info/rhsg/census/names1851.htm Joan

Can't see a birth in shortened ancestry bmd for a Charltotte Cosham, Lewes, 1838, but there are 2 female Cosham births registered there in 1838. One of them could be the Charlotte Cosham (Cotham) I think your best course of action is to get the marriage cert. The fathers' names would be on it.

Elaine

Elaine Report 11 Aug 2006 09:22

British Isles Vital Records Index - set of 16 discs produced by Church of latter Day Saints. Similar to IGI. Coverage varies -. http://www.genoot(.)com/downloads/BVRI2/ click on the blue numbers alongside the counties and it will show which parishes it covers. Cost approx. 20 pounds.

You see quite a few county/parish records CD´s on ebay - I haven´t used any so cannot comment from a personal point of view, but have heard others say they have not been very useful and have been difficult to navigate. The BIVRI is produced by the Church of Latter Day Saints - and the current version is version 2 and comprises of 16 discs. I paid 20 pounds for mine a year ago but I think someone said they are now 21-22 pounds. These also come up on ebay but watch the price - I have seen them go for more than 20 pounds for some reason (might as well buy them new from the LDS). If they cover an area you are interested in then they are a valuable source of parish record information - have been particularly useful to me for Dorset which is covered quite well. Plenty of people on the boards will do lookups for you if you place a request.
