glad you got it. i typed the name in and found my great great grandmother got divorced and there was a third party involved----what a scandal in 1897 Karen

Merry Report 31 Aug 2006 14:21

Cor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!!!! One of my distant rellies married a woman over 40 years his junior in 1897. They had two daughters and he died in 1906. Very soon after his death the young widow remarried to the man who had been her husband's business assistant. A closer relation told me there was a rumour her second child was not the 1st hubby's but the child of the man she married in 1906. Now I see the not-so-happy-couple were divorced in 1903!!! So, perhaps the rumour is true..........*Rushes to find out anything else on this scandal* Merry

Merry don't you just love finding scandal, my other great great grandmother was married in 1899,had 4 children by 1908,then by 1910 she uped and left the kids,by 1912 she'd had another daughter and in 1913 married the daughters father(although can't find the birth on registers so think daughter had another father),she then had two more sons in 1914 and 1916. I don't know what happened to the second hudband but in 1931 she married again to a man that was the same age as her oldest son. he was 31 and she said she was 45 but she was 56!!!!! on her second and third marriage certs she said she was a widow but both husbands were still alive !!!!!! oh and i forget to mention we later found out she was a prostitute............... i'd have loved to have met her, Karen

Gosh Karen, so would I! Does anyone know exactly what all the blurb means on the divorce index (on 1837online)? The entry I'm looking at reads like this: 1903: 4045 Horniman (Frederick John) v. H. (Minnie Louisa), Masser (Wm Jos), ------ Pyne (Sir J. Salter) & Jarvis (Arthur Wickham) I know that William Masser would be the co-respondent, as he was the man she married in 1906, but who are Pyne and Jarvis??? The majority of entries on the index page don't have additional names recorded, but a few do. Any ideas? Surely not MORE co-respondents????????!!!!! Merry

I just got one from national archives site which I downloaded electronically for £8.50 . I t was my grandfather's divorce and listsi all the adultery and where it took place in detail . It gives earnings addresses and previous addresses dates of birth of children , from that I found living 3 half nieces for my father and some cousins for me ! With the help of another Genes member . What I think Sir Pyne is the judge /magistrate who heard the divorce and the other names would be the solicitors for the other party.... Get the copy so much info in it . Kim

Kim, can I just ask how you searched for a divorce from the nat archives site?

Kim

Kim Report 1 Sep 2006 12:55

I googled documents online, and just stuck in the name of my ancestor (I did know he got divorced) but was looking for medal card /will . Up came the details and when i clicked on it they said there is a new digital way of sending it and did I want to proceed as it cost £8.50. It was 12 pages including the marriage cert and Full details of everything that happened (Well he brought the divorce so there's no evidence of HIS misdemeanours) You can now search the whole of national archives digital documents on line wills, medal cards, naval documents, even found my grt grt grandfather on there details of all sorts etc. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ Kim

Thanks, unfortunately my fella's not coming up - you're so lucky finding that! I have a reference from the Times Online but its going to mean a trip to the NA itself, whenever I can manage. He divorved wife number one as she was having an affair I believe, I think she threw herself in the river in Chester later, I'm dying to find out the details as I think he used the last of the family fortune to get shut of her!
