Pat, as I well know from my partner's family tree, there are a lot of Taylors (I was going to put 'lot' in capitals to emphasize it, but then.... I didn't!) Your next step should be to get Maud's marriage certificate, as that will tell you her father's name and occupation so you have something to check against possible sightings on the census and possible birth registrations. Her marriage cert will also give you witnesses' names which may or may not be useful clues. Kate.

Have you got the marriage certificate? This will tell you her fathers name. You really need to do this before you make any guesses with the census. However, there is an entry on 1881 RG11/2970 folio 129 page 34 for a Maud M Taylor aged 1 born Stroud with parents Arthur aged 28 and Mary aged 27. Pauline

You could try the birth index, looking for births in the right area for the time, and order the cert with the fathers name as a checking point. Glen

Pat, can you just tell us how you know her father was Arthur, please? And do you have Maud's marriage certificate? If you do, what does it say for Arthur's occupation, and who were the witnesses? And what was Maud's address on it? Kate.

What information have you got so far,and where have you looked. It is possible to use the census as a guide, but it is easy to follow the wrong person and descendants unless you have something definate to work with. As for getting stuck with this, imho it depends how hard you look. Glen

Are you searching the full index on ancestry or using the partial index or just freebmd? Glen

Patricia

Patricia Report 4 Sep 2006 19:34

just freebmd and family search not very well

Glen In Tinsel Knickers

Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 4 Sep 2006 19:40

The reason i asked is because the full ancestry index is free to use,you have to register with ancestry, but it is all free of charge. There are two ancestry index databases.one is partially complete and goes up to 1910ish the full index covers 1837 to 1983. Freebmd is again incomplete but can be useful for pre 1910 work. If you have the fathers name it helps with the check in the census, but it won't gaurantee that the name of the wife is really the mother to Maud.Only the cert will tell you that for certain. If Maud is one of your direct line,it would be best to confirm her parents with a cert, you can then be more certain that you are following the right ancestors in the earlier years. Glen

There is no obvious match in the 1991. From the 1881 result Arthur is a plasterer. On the marriage cert for Maud, where was the wedding? I only ask because the 1881 shows her living in Birmingham, but born Stroud. Glen (who has to knock off in a few minutes)

Patricia

Patricia Report 4 Sep 2006 20:36

Wedding cert states Aston Birmingham

Kate

Kate Report 4 Sep 2006 23:11

Pat, there is a birth entry on FreeBMD: Births Dec 1879 Taylor Maud Mary Strand 1b 3_4 I've looked at the image, and the district should definitely be Stroud, not Strand. But it's not clear enough on FreeBMD to make out the page number properly. I will check on ancestry and get back to you soon... Kate.

Kate Report 4 Sep 2006 23:27

Okay, finally loaded the image on ancestry and it is Dec 1879 births Taylor Maud Mary Stroud 6a 344 Don't know why she missed the 'Mary' off on her marriage certificate, but I would bet it is her as she is Maud M. Taylor on that census. Kate.
