The nearest you would get is to look at the 1901 census Roy

Michelle, The records sort of work the other way around I think - you pick a regiment, then check out where they were and when. From vague recollection/understanding, quite a few regiments passed through Shorncliffe at different times. Perhaps if you said how you come to be asking this question, that would help folk think about it for you in a more focused way. Have you tried googling Shorncliffe Barracks?, You're sure to get some kind of lead that way. Regs Annie

hi annie yeah - i have googled both shorncliffe and the regiment. the reason i ask is because my grandad was adopted but i have his birth cert showing mum as married to a soldier. i think the marriage is a lie but just wanted to check if the regiment she says her husband belonged to was in the area at the time. The father listed is William George Matthews, Private West York Regiment this is in July 1898 my great nan on cert is Edith Fanny Matthews formerly Marwood i think she lied about the marriage because i can't find any trace of her in married name in 1901 and cannot find trace of marriage thanks michelle

Her details match with the Edith Fanny Marwood born 1876 in the Tonbridge district. Here she is in 1881: Household: Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability Saml. MARWOOD Head M Male 39 Moreton Hampstead, Devon, England Stone Mason Susan MARWOOD Wife M Female 40 Moreton Hampstead, Devon, England Fredk. MARWOOD Son Male 8 Battle, Sussex, England Scholar Edith MARWOOD Daur Female 4 Southboro Tunbg, Kent, England Scholar Ellen MARWOOD Daur Female 2 Southboro Tunbg, Kent, England Source Information: Dwelling 17 Charles Street Census Place Tonbridge, Kent, England Family History Library Film 1341218 Public Records Office Reference RG11 Piece / Folio 0917 / 46 Page Number 32 and she's listed as being 24 and being born in Southboro in 1901 so it must be the same one. This is interesting: Her mother was Susan Matthews. Might be worth following that line in case William George was a relative. What was your granddad's name? Perhaps he was named after the father? Rose

Michelle Report 12 Sep 2006 19:38

hi rose my grandads name was edward thomas. he was adopted by a family called epps but used the surname Marwood (not Matthews which you would think if they had been married). my mum's maiden name is marwood. thanks again Michelle

Michelle, The marriage is on FreeBMD. Could be Edith made the whole thing up or William George really was the father. Seems strange it was the same as her mother's maiden name. Try researching Susan's side and see what you can find. Rose

ok - what do you guys think of this my great nan put on my grandads birth cert father = william george matthews and that she was married - which i think is a lie as rose discovered for me her mother's maiden name was Matthews. I have just found on 1871 census that she had a brother called William G who was 4 months old in that census and wasn't around for the next census so probably died a baby/child. William George Matthews - made up name? am i reading too much into this? thanks michelle

Michelle

Michelle Report 12 Sep 2006 22:17

ah - so william george matthews would have to have been there if he appeared on the birth cert? thank you yvonne

Here's another William George Marwood Births Mar 1897 Marwood William George Elham 2a 1059 In 1901 he's boarding with the Overy family in Folkestone. No other family members with him. I wonder if he's Edith's too.The family he's with seem to think he was born in Tunbridge but he wasn't. Edith was though. Rose

Do you have an address for the place of birth of Edward Thomas? I live fairly near Folkestone and can check parish registers for a baptism, to see if there is anymore information, once I know which ones to check. When I looked at baptism records for one particular church near Shorncliffe Barracks, the vicar had listed the supposed father of all the illegitimate babies baptised there. Gwyn

Michelle, If you can afford the 7 pounds it might be worth it. Here's some info on the West Yorkshire Regiment: http://regiments.org/regiments/uk/inf/014WYork.htm The 2nd Batt. was at Dover in 1896 Rose
