Kerry There is a John Gudgin aged 6 living with a Stapleton family in Shillington, which I remember from your other post. He is listed as son-in-law, which could mean stepson.

Hi Kerry I was the one who helped you out before with the Gugdin's - did the info from that guy Alan on Ancestry send you in another direction? I can see from his tree on Ancestry that it gives John Gudgin born 1857 - son of George Stapleton and Emma Gudgin (Gudgeon). That Emma was born in Ikleford daughter of John and Arabel. I am fairly confident that the one you have is correct. Alex

I wasn't completely sure I was gonig in the right direction.....only in circles.. Am I concenrating to much on the spelling of the last name? Does the spelling even matter? I have no idea.....

Christine

Christine Report 15 Sep 2006 19:55

All depends how the enumerator read/heard the surname and then wrote it in his records. I have Bidwells becoming Bedwells and one reverting back to Bidwell for his marriage and a census return, before - you've guessed it, - becoming a Bedwell again! You could get his marriage cert - father's name would be on that, but then again, the baptism does seem to indicate that he was illegitimate. A parish record look-up would show if he was.

Well I've learnt that with certain names you shouldn't fixate too much on the spellings. Certainly with a name like Gudgeon, back then people were mostly illiterate so saying the name Gudgeon to someone they might think it was just spelt Gudgen, Gudgon, Gudgin - depending on peoples accents. After reading numerous books on genealogy and one by John Titford which had a whole chapter devoted to names - it is essential in family history to not go down the road of refusing to look into people where the spelling doesn't match exactly. Dont feel like you are going down the wrong track or round in circles. This is definitely your man! Just be glad he wasn't a Smith or a Jones! Plus its a small place and you can be pretty sure he is the right one - its not like he lives in the depths of London with a name like John Smith. Alex
