can anyone give me any advice on how to find my grandfather who had a common name without spending a fortune! Have date of death, died in 1936, aged 45. Have his marriage certificate in 1911, aged 21, but after ordering a couple of certs, with wrong person on have decided to rethink how to find him, also know his father's name what I need to try and find out please is where to start, ie in 1890 and the best place to look, he was from Stepney/Bethnal Green as far as I know many thanks

Have you tried looking on the 1901 census, to see if that gives his birthplace? If you post the names, including his fathers and his occupation, I will take a look for you. Pen x

thanks Pen, details as follows Walter William White, father Henry, listed as brickmaker at the time of Williams wedding in 1911 (address of bride and groom was 25 Tarling Street, St George in the East) would be a common name! thanks again

Sorry, got called away. Looks like you are getting a helping hand though, lol. Are any of the above any good? Might be a good idea to list the certs that you have already ordered and been unable to match. Pen x

Could his father be called Harry? (I I have Henrys that are sometimes called Harry on diff censuses.) There is a Harry White agd 39 a brushmaker , born Shoreditch with wife Emily 36 and children , George, Emily, Jessie, Eunice, Lily and Walter aged 8 mths on the 1891 census living in London, Shoreditch. Haggerston. There are several Whites , William , George and John all married with children living in the area Shoreditch, Bethnal Green etc and three have sons Walter and two have daughters Lilly. Do these names ring any bells. Did Walter william die whilst in the Royal Horse Artillary? If so he may be in military deaths .M

You mention the Royal Horse Artillery - and that would lead me to think of Woolwich (Plumstead is now part of Woolwich) where they were barracked from about 1782 until about 1911. Depending on the Regiment they may have stayed in Woolwich even longer until c. 1940s when they became part of the Kings Troop and I think they were then housed somewhere in the Camden area.
