Scottish widows dressing in black for a year after hubby's death. Does anyone know when this tradition stopped? Or is it still alive today? Thanks. |

Rebekah It wasn't just a Scottish custom, it happened everywhere. It certainly continued into the 20th century. My Scottish grandfather died in the 1960s and my grandmother wore black for a year, and then what was called 'half-mourning' (purple, or dark lilac) for another year. Queen Victoria wore mourning for the rest of her life after her beloved Albert died, and the Court was expected to wear black too. OC |
