Rebekah It wasn't just a Scottish custom, it happened everywhere. It certainly continued into the 20th century. My Scottish grandfather died in the 1960s and my grandmother wore black for a year, and then what was called 'half-mourning' (purple, or dark lilac) for another year. Queen Victoria wore mourning for the rest of her life after her beloved Albert died, and the Court was expected to wear black too. OC

Scottish widows dressing in black for a year after hubby's death. Does anyone know when this tradition stopped? Or is it still alive today? Thanks.
