I paid my first visit to a records office at the weekend and saw a copy of my GGG Grandfathers will. Unfortunately it was bound in a book and would have cost £5.50 per page to get copied (11 pages). I'm sure I've read you can order a copy of a will for £5 but can't remember where from. The will was 'proved' in 1867, 9 months after death at Newcastle upon Tyne. Any advice welcome. Also can anyone tell me a website which will convert £14,000 in 1867 to todays value. (If you can also tell me why I'm not rich that would be nice) lol T.O.R. ;o))

Thank you Chris. Just for info £14000 in 1870 is only worth £639,800 today. lol T.O.R. ;o))

£14000 was the value of the estate. He left £3000 plus personal jewellery, trinkets and ornaments to his wife. Rest of estate went to his brother and business partner.

Went to website you mentioned but they give the address as The Postal Searches and Copies Department The Probate Registry 1st Floor Castle Chambers Clifford Street York YO1 9RG Tel: +44 (1904) 666777 Fax: +44 (1904) 666776 Do I need to use the address you gave if I know the date the will was proved ??
