Hi Christine. I am 99% sure that Mary's parents were Edward Atkins and Sarah Kendall. Will try BMD's again trying 1880 for her birth. I'm sure my Dad said her birthday was in June, he told me quite a few things about her but when your little you don't take it in regretfully. Thanks for your interest. Cheryl x

Hi Jim Thanks for your interested I have just send for Lillian's birth certificate I'm keeping my fingers crossed it is the right one. My Gran only had one name so I don't think the Florence Mary is her. Joseph is another child of Edward Atkins and Sarah Kendall, he is brother to Robert. Cheryl x

I'd agree with Shirley with the Edward/Edwin thing... On the birth cert search... don't forget that ''She died in 1923 aged 43 years. So date of birth is 1881.'' actually mean she could have been born in 1880. Her given-age at the censuses would mean she could have been born any time from beginning April 1880 to and March 1881 (allowing a day or two at the beginning and end for the varying census dates). According to Genuki, Hucknall Torkard comes under Basford District (unless it's the other Hucknall 'under Huthwaite' - which comes under Mansfield). The Ancestry BMD search using Soundex, gives some possibilities. Christine

If she had a middle name there is this birth:- Mary Catherine Atkins Dec. qtr. 1880, Downham, 4b, 852 (or 352, not sure). Downham would cover Hucknall. Kath. x

Hi Shirley Thanks for your advice. I to think that Edward and Edwin are one in the same. I would feel more confident if I could find Mary's birth certifcate. But no luck as yet Thanks again Cheryl

Well Edward and Edwin were often interchanged, depended on local accents and if people couldnt read or write the difference wouldn't be noticed. I think you can only decide if they are the same person according to all the info you can find and then make a decision. I have a marriage cert of 1890 were the groom is listed as Darter instead of Dartnell( from London) and the bride as Ettterley instead of Hettreley (from Kent) married in Kent. The grooms dad tho is correctly listed and makes it the cincher plus i have found the couple on the 1891 census living in the same area. was a long shot when i decided to get the cert
