I've just received a birth cert and mother has no maiden name. She has the same last name as her husband though. I would have thought that if she shared the same last name, wouldn't it say, 'Smith, formerly Smith'? I have sent off for one of their other childrens cert just incase this one was incorrect. Could there be another explaination for this? Deb:)

Hi Deb I had the same thing happen on one of mine. After much puzzling and tracking what happened to her after the birth of her next child and widowhood etc I think she was just a bit thick. My answer was that her being a bit thick and possibly a new registrar in post meant that between the two of them they made a pig's ear of the registration! Cannot otherwise think of any possible reason why maiden name not given. I will keep tabs on this thread now in case anyone else has any ideas as it might be helpful. Jill
