Hi all Ok im stuck im trying to find out what happened to my great great grandmother i was told she died at child birth which produce my great grandad. Know one knew till i found out who his mother was till i found a Baptisms record from 1900 not even my great granddad knew who his mother or father was as he was brought up by his auntie and she just told him she was dead and they didn’t know who his father is My gg grandmother name is EDITH EMMA ROGERS. dob 1873. PLB Crawley, Hampshire, England. Her father was HENRY ROGERS and mother was JANE ROGERS. On the baptism record i found it said ROBERT BECKELL was the father but cant find anything on him. Also it says on the record there Adobe was Hastings and he was a Clerk. But his Baptism was in Winchester. I have checked both my great grandfathers death cert and marriage cert but nothing on there also he has never had a birth cert and i cant find one for him anywere. In the 1901 census i found that my g grandfather was living with his grandparents then, name was William Bechells. His name when he died was William Henry Beckles. I f u could give any help or advice i would be very gratefully

Gavin, this is the only one that looks as though he could be yours is Henry William W Rogers, Dec quarter 1998 Bridge, Kent Volume 2a, page 822 I couldn't see anything under Bechells, Beckles or Beckell. If his mother wasn't married at the time she registered the child she would have had to register him under her name unless the father was able to accompany her. Victoria

Victoria Report 25 Jul 2007 12:54

I am not sure that Edith Emma's sister Elizabeth is one and the same as Elizabeth Louise who married Robert Bruce Beckles. Edith Emma's sister would have been 33 in 1901 - not 51 as she appears on the census. Eighteen years 'out' is a lot. Victoria

There is this cemetery in Winchester:- Magdalen Hill Cemetery, Magdalen Hill, Alresford Road, Winchester SO21 1HE Tel 01962 854135 You could give them a ring and ask if they have a buriel record for him for that year. If not they may be able to give you details of any other cemeteries nearby. Kath. x

I've been having another think about this. You say your g grandfather's mother died in childbirth. In this case how can you be sure that the mother and father named on the baptism record were actually his. I would think it more likely to be the names of the two people who brought him up. If his mother died having him, she wouldn't even have been able to register his birth, so the birth could be registered in any name really. Kath. x

Gavin Report 25 Jul 2007 13:14

He was brought up by Alma Jane rogers here sister. here married name was pumphrey. They couldnt have children there self . and all she said that she died at child birth and never told him who his mother or father was. Im only guessing that edith is his mother as she is on the baptism record i found.

Gavin You say that the parents on the baptism record were Edith Rogers & Robert Beckell. My theory (for what it's worth - & please don't take offence!) is that Edith had a 'relationship' with Robert Beckles (he who lived in Hastings), which resulted in the birth of William (in Hastings). He was then sent to live temporarily with his grandparents in Hampshire. What do you think? Angela

Gavin

Gavin Report 25 Jul 2007 13:44

could be. I dont think she got married. maybe she did have a fling with him had the baby she maybe died or even didnt want him so sent him to his grandparents. Then in 1906 his grandfather died not sure when his gran did. so her sistertook him on as she couldnt have kids herself. But if edith had died would there be a record of her dying about 1899-1900? is there any chance that she may be buried next to her father? or is that just me dreaming hehe.
