Just a quick summary as I'm starting to get confused.

Eva was a Thomas, born 1915.
Edith, Eva's mother, was a Lloyd, born c1891. Married to an unknown Thomas.
Elizabeth, Edith's mother, obviously had a relationship with a Lloyd at some stage; most probably married. However you think she may have been married to a Sheldon. This would be after Lloyd?

Here are the possible Ediths between Mar 1890 - Dec 1892.
Births Sep 1890 Lloyd Edith Selina Chester 8a 416
Births Dec 1890 Lloyd Edith Nona Chester 8a 369
Births Mar 1891 Lloyd Edith Elizabeth Chester 8a 390

Considering you believe Edith was born in 1891 and her mother was called Elizabeth, the last one looks promising.

As you say, it is very difficult to find Edith on any census.

In the 1911 census there is an Alfred Ernest Sheldon in Wrexham. He is 27, married and a private in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Are you grasping at straws here? You need some certificates.

Do you have names for the Sheldon connection on the sympathy card? Can you work back from them?

After rooting through my oms old photos, there was a Sympathy card suggesting that Edith Thomas could have been an Edith Sheldon before thomas. as I think Ediths mom and Dad could have been Elizabeth Sheldon (previously lloyd) and Alfred Ernest Sheldon. This is still in the chester or wrexham area as my mom suggests thats where they had always lived. Trouble is there is conflicting dates birth dates and census information to properly identify them as definitely Ediths parents. I found an Edith Thomas who was born 1903/4, however Edith dies in 1958 becuase my mom remebers this. so that would make her birthdate 1891, so I am now trying to find an edith Sheldon around 1891.

Well Sybil's birth index was found and Jean/Joan could be a typo error. However Patricia and William were either not born in Chester or were born before the mother's maiden name was included in the index. As the first of the Thomas/Lloyd children born in Chester was registered in 1915 and mothers' maiden names were included from Sept 1911 it seems the marriage was around 1913/1914.

As I said before they could have been born before Sept 1911 however that's quite a gap between 1911 and 1915. There's no Patricia Thomas, mother's name Lloyd, born anywhere in England & Wales between 1911 & 1941. Is there any chance she was a step-sister?

However as my nan left my grandad in the 1970's she distanced herself from the family so the sisters and brothers mentioned above may not be the only siblings as my nan was very vague about her past!

julie Report 27 Sep 2012 09:23

ok so what I have found is Eva Cavell Thomas mother was an Edith Thomas but I dont know what Edith maiden name was or who she married but I think they were still from the Chester area. Edith and ? would have been my great grandparents. Eva (my grandmother) married my grandad William Williets (sometimes spelt Willietts) and had my mom Pamela and her brother Keith but they then got divorced (around 1970s) and I dont know if she remarried the person she then went to live with, so dont have a name a present. Im trying to find out more about my Great grandparents. Eva had brothers and sisters called patricia, William, Jean and Sybil.

This looks like Eva and sisters.

Births Jun 1915 Thomas Vera M Lloyd Chester 8a 701
Births Dec 1917 Thomas Eva C Lloyd Chester 8a 521 <<<<<<<<<<<<
Births Dec 1919 Thomas Sybil B Lloyd Chester 8a 679
Births Jun 1923 THOMAS Joan Lloyd Chester 8a 636

This is the only Thomas/Lloyd marriage in Chester at about the right time. However this possibly isn't your couple, or David Thomas married Selina William.

Julie

Is it a short form birth certificate that you have found?? That doesn't show the parents.

You will have to buy the long certificate to get the information.

Fanny was alice,'s mom :-) . Now all I need to do is find who the father was..Ihave anotherquestion if I may,on my mothers side I have found a paper copy of my grandmother birth cert but it doesn'tlist the parents. There is a referencenumber. Whatis this for and will it take me to anotherdocument that might list the parents? Thanks

julie

julie Report 20 Sep 2012 12:57

After compiling all the info From Jax (thankyou) Fanny still is the favourite as potential mother to Alice, but of course there were 2 other Woolgar siblings from Rosannah that although not living in the house in the 1911 census could have had a child that they needed to home with the grandparents. So I definitely need to wait for the Birth ceertificate. In the mean time can you give me some adive as to where I need to go to find out more information such as occupations for some of the people already in the tree. Ive tired the Parish records on this site but most of the time they dont have the person listed, any hints appreciated.

oh dear, what am I like - didnt reaslise to turn over the page, takes me back to school exams lol. Anyway Jax, thank you for your email, I will print off all your census findings, certainly more information for me to look at and I 'm better looking at it on old fashioned paper so I can write notes. (and I cannot print off now as Arsenal are playing and my husband will moan ;-) ) Im beginning to realise that just becase they are called one name on one census or certificate, they can change, happended when researching my grandad, Knew him as Sonny, my Dad said his name was Henry, found Death sert but no Birth cert, still couldnt find him then found him under Thomas Henry!! You've really been helpful. I will update more tomorrow.
