"Please use the English language" say the board guidelines.
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/content.page/message_board_guidelines

In spite of this, it now seems impossible to use a colon

Type a colon (:) now and that's what you get.
This also apples to any old posts that used a colon.

perhaps a little colon irrigation might flush them out of the system ? :S

It is putting the emotocons everywhere in lots of posts where people haven't placed them!

I wondered why little frowning faces were appearing in my posts.

But now I don't seem able to get either : colons or emoticons

: :S

Edit: Ok make me a liar lol!

Oh how I hate emoticons! I'd like to declare war on the little b******s. Looks like they're planning to take over the world starting with these boards.

a colon followed by an html tag that starts with a pointy bracket turns into the idiotface in Sylvia's post where she seems to think it isn't. ;)

So if you end a line with a colon and then hit enter, what that does is add this, where the square bracket is really a pointy bracket (note how I don't end this line in a colon) --

[br]

to your post, that being the tag for a hard line break.

Instead of getting a colon followed by a line break, you get an idiotface followed by

br]

All that has to be done is to change the html for the idiotfaces to something that people don't type all the time.

Windows X P (without a space) is the same thing; type that and you get XP.

Wants fixing soon. I'm a serial colon user!

I wonder what is does with the semi colon;

Ah, nothing

well, I am using IE6 ...... my favourite search engine though out of date.

so I don't see the emoticons, and obviously don't get the change to colons

I tried using Mozilla Firefox yesterday ...... it was sooooooooooooooooooo slow that I didn't even get my first message to post!

I copied it, came back to IE6, pasted, and it posted immediately.

Obviously I'm going to have the same problem with GR and Mozilla that I have with one other site (which is based in Australia)

I have waited as long as 10 minutes for a message to post on that site.

Yesterday, I waited 2 minutes for the message to post on GR before giving up.

Other sites are fine, just these 2

and now I'm trying Mozilla again :

I can type a colon: and so far it hasn't added an unwanted emoticon!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 6 May 2011 22:18

You only get the stupid face if you type a colon and immediately after that hit "enter" to start a new line. That's what I was explaining above. It's hard to explain when you can't type the code without creating the problem!

The solution is to type (or copy&paste, in some cases I've seen) the colon, then put a space, then hit enter.

But obviously I'm not going to be able to spread that little fix to everybody posting on the board.

I'm going to get used to this new set-up and then email my ex best friend at brightsolid and point out these code problems and ask for them to be fixed.

All they have to do is assign different values to the codes for the problem idiotfaces. Nowhere else I know of that converts things to icons -- like semi-colon close-parentheses for wink -- creates these problems.

Janey

what happens when you do :-

which is what I usually do?

now I'll ahve to switch over to Mozilla to see what happens myself!

it is soooooooooooo slow to post on GR through Mozilla

sylvia

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 6 May 2011 23:29

so you can do :-

and immediately hit enter

without getting a face

I just went through a two-page thread of mine that I was referring someone to, since she's offered some parish records lookups.

It took me about 10 minutes to go through it and eliminate all the stupidfaces where I had put colons at the end of lines, so the thing was reasonably intelligible.

Definitely gonna email them about this one. You too, mgnv??

MaureeninNY Report 7 May 2011 02:21

Speaking of stupidfaces......I'm just testing to see if I can recreate what happened when I typed out 3:30 pm in a post. I ended up with 3 red heart 30.
Could have been worse,I suppose, but it was a funeral notice.

Maureen

Edit
OK-so is it colon 3(or any number?) that does that? I'm trying to type three thirty pm numerically.
:30

Edit
I guess so.

or
Don't mind me...just playing around.

or colon space enter

3: 30

AH!!!!!!! Thank you,Janey!!!!!!!! OK,so every colon has to have a space after it no matter where it is. (Not touching that line even with a 10 footer).

Maureen

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 7 May 2011 05:49

You had fun there Maureen!!!

OR you can put colon immediately followed by a - (dash or hyphen), which is what I usually do anyway (except when typing a time, of course!).

But Janey could avoid getting stupid faces (until GR makes changes) by just putting a - (dash or hyphen) after her colon

sylvia

MaureeninNY

You always get me into these things late at night,Sylvia!

Let's see :-

But-why not just put a space instead? Guess I'm not a colon dash sort of gal.

Maureen
