Does anyone find that the new system of showing no record of deleted posts to be a disadvantage? I did recently, when I replied on a thread where several posts had been deleted, and I found myself basically replying to something different to what had been posted originally. It got me in a right pickle. Had I known that posts had been deleted, I might have realised that something else had been said of which I was not aware.

What do folks think? Should we ask for the Deleted Post to be brought back?

I must admit that I think it sometimes makes a thread very disjointed when posts have been deleted with no trace.

I would like them brought back but if possible with the name of the person who deleted the post - either "deleted by - then poster's name" or "deleted by Genes".

Hi Kath. I'm not particularly bothered about who deleted them, and the original poster might not want their name shown if they have made a huge gaff. I'd just like to know that something had been said that I didn't know about. Might have stopped me putting my big feet in it.

Hi Meg,

I don't think people can win either way as some wonder why posts have been deleted when it may have been a double post and people have deleted the 2nd one.

I think it's tidier without the posts. However I think people need to appreciate that someone may have missed a post (that's subsequently been deleted) and make allowances ....if we wondered whether we should reply to a thread because we don't know for certain whether a post has been deleted or not, then some of our conversations on here will be very short.

Seeing a post in context is a great thing, it helps understand all the posts so much better. However, a post should be able to stand alone too, ie if it's a rude post, it doesn't matter whether it followed someone else's rude post that has subsequently been deleted, it's still rude and people should be able to comment on it whether they see the whole picture or not.

I don't know if that makes sense :)

Madmeg Report 15 Jan 2011 02:37

'FRaid your post didn't make sense to me SRS. Surely deleting double posts should be discouraged, and most of us don't do that. Your second paragraph is, I think, relevant, as my own response to a thread (and you well know which one!) might have been very diferent had I known that posts had been deleted - and might have saved a lot of distress on both sides. I don't mind short conversations,

I didn't follow the rest of your post so am in danger of garbling!

I would like to see Post Deleted return

I don't much care if it says who deleted it

In fact, I had long begun to post that I had deleted a posting "because xxxxx" so that it was obvious a) that I had done it myself, and b) why I had done it.

It doesn't take much effort to type "duplicated posting" or "information wrong"

What I meant was that sometimes people press the submit button twice and therefore it's an instant duplication. Some people instantly (without thinking sometimes) click on delete of the duplicate post as they've realised what they've done. Quite a lot of people do this. Some will just say duplicate post underneath but with others deletion is just an instant reaction. You can't help duplicate posts, it's just an accident :)

I like the deletions because sometimes it's quite hard to read through pages and pages of certain threads were a lot of people have deleted... I'd rather just see what's relevant.

Well I thought the whole point of the message boards was to discuss, help and chat. I think long conversations as long as they're polite should be encouraged. I don't think people should be afraid of posting just in case..... As I was saying, if you thought something is wrong or rude, you had every right to say so in a polite manner. Even if you were wrong in your analysis of the conversation, people should respond to you politely.

Personally, as you brought the other conversation up. I didn't see what was so wrong with your posts initially, you made a lot of good points. I think things got quite personal towards the end so I commented on that but initially you were adding to the thread with the best of intentions.

I mentioned the fact that it no longer donated deletes, after GR did their last 'improvements' in November. No -on seemed to take me up on this.

I was going to add last night but pc froze as I pressed send, I find that is my usual reason for posting twice.

I don't like the deletion with no reference to it having been there. It's not just on posts where it can influence the way the 'tone' of the conversations goes, though that has created confusion as to who said what and 'who started it' so to speak.

I've noticed it increasingly on threads where info has been given say for eg:

"birth 2nd qtr 1864' and then the OP has said "thank you for that info" but the info has been deleted already...so subsequent posters don't know what that info was in the first place, or whether it ever appeared on the thread or was sent by PM

In the case of 'wrong information' I would rather not delete it but edit it with "This is the wrong family " etc, that way other searchers can disregard it if they find the same info ( or double check it anyway).

( MadMeg I added a message to you on 'that' thread, I don't know if you read it before the thread was deleted, or if you want to, but I kept a copy just in case)

I also believe that a thread should show that a post has been deleted but I also think that it should show whether the thread was deleted by the poster or by Genes.

In that disgusting thread yesterday some vile comments were made then deleted presumably by the poster. That same poster then pretended to be the injured party eliciting the sympathy of others. This wouldn't have happened if the thread had showed that a post had been deleted and by whom.

I'm afraid that my opinion of all those who took part in that thread has dropped considerably. It was nothing more than a slanging match!

Margaret, if we're talking about the same thread, it was a question of privacy and the right to keep your personal information private. There were a lot of polite posts on there however, some posts were unnecessarily personal.

I'm sorry and I don't want to carp on about this, but there was more to that thread than what was later 'visible' including a deleted post on General which I saw and most , if not all , of those on Tips board did not.

I think ALL posts should remain, other than at the discretion of GR ( ie those which absolutely do break T & Cs and those should be flagged as deleted by GR) , whether they are accidental duplicates or otherwise, and any post which has been edited should show 'Edited'.

And yes that means people have to stand by what they have said...including me when I have gone off on one!

Hi Rose,

I'm actually strongly against posts remaining, that's one of the things I like about GR - you can delete.

I think it's too easy Rose for people to put things on GR which they regret later. Not because they've said anything nasty or offensive but because people can "track them down" later through google and it may reveal someone's identity. It could be that they've put info about family they're researching a number of years ago where they've revealed their email address (could be on another site) or revealed too much about themselves or a member of their family.

Or someone has been offhand with them on a thread because they've done something silly (not malicious) and people can google their posts, they may feel shamed by the whole experience.

I think that the accidental duplicates such as SRS's earlier, could be deleted safely because it actually carries no information, but posts in threads that are relevant should stay,

as was suggested it takes no real effort to EDIT a post saying that " I have edited, removed info........ Because.............."

removing relevant posts DOES make a thread

" Lose its thread, as it were!!"

Genes Reunited have stated on their Facebook page that they are going to introduce software so that if request review is clicked it will be removed from the boards immediately and put in a holding "cell" for want of a better word until the support team have a chance to review it and either reinstate it or delete it.

I would like the deleted post message back. When a post is deleted it can change the context of a thread and a least if there is an indication that posts have been deleted then subsequent readers may better understand the flow of the thread.

I don't understand why lookups are deleted though

jax

jax Report 15 Jan 2011 18:07

I will delete if someone asks for a look up and someone has got there before me as I dont see much point of leaving the same info there, but it is normally done within seconds so not really seen by anyone else.

Deleting info from a thread that is helpful does'nt make sense.

Madmeg Report 15 Jan 2011 18:17

I wasn't meaning that posts shouldn't be deleted, but that something should say "deleted post". It would have saved me and the person on "that" thread getting into an unecessary fight.

I've sometimes posted something I shouldn't (the person on "that" thread usually reminds me!) so I go back and edit it, rather than deleting. Or something that turns out to be rubbish - edited with an explanation of why.

RR, I don't believe I saw your post, so please let me have a copy.

TootyFruity

TootyFruity Report 15 Jan 2011 18:19

I agree MadMeg there should be a record of some sort that a post has been removed.

jax Report 15 Jan 2011 18:28

At least with the old system it did'nt look like you were talking to yourself. I normally make a point in saying their name when advising people they have replied to an old thread, as it does look stupid if they then delete
