What makes you think it might be wrong?

The transcribers type what they see but sometimes there are transcriptions errors , some GRO pages are very hard to read especially the earlier ones.
There can be different spellings for names as often people couldn't read or write so the names are spelt as the Registrar heard them. For instance I have the marriage cert for a George Henry Dartner and Elizabeth Etterley married in Medway Kent in 1871 he came from Greenwich which is now SE London. So the difference in local accent had him wrong he was Dartnell & she was Hetterley. fortunately his fathers christian name and occupation as a barge builder clinched it and finding them on the 1911 census confirmed the marriage year

im looking at my nan dorothy mace 1926 but its saying she died age 0 at birth ?? i dont understand it

Sometimes when a child died, the family named the next child the same name, this happened a lot in my family, could this be what you're looking at, i.e an earlier siblings death?

Why do you think this birth and death is your nan's? Was she born in Yorkshire or do you recognise the mother's maiden name?

It appears you must have found the wrong birth for Dorothy Mace.

Don't forget that even though the FreeBMD transcription may well match a very good image, this is in fact a transcription of a scan of a transcription!

The GRO index itself is compiled from originals submitted to them quarterly from the various register offices and contains a certain percentage of errors and omissions which is why the GRO started the, now abandoned, Project Dove to build a new index from scratch.

I have one case where the birth index contains the father's first name rather than that of the child. Took me a while to find that and I could only prove it by buying the certificate itself. I have added a postem on FreeBMD to inform others.

So from a source citation point of view the certificate can be considered primary information (and even these aren't fool-proof) except maybe in the case of death certs where you need to consider who is the informant and whether they are likely to know 'primary' information about age/DOB for instance.

A clear GRO index scan can only be considered, at most, secondary information (see above about death certs) and a transcription of a GRO index entry (without sight of the scan) can only really be considered tertiary (questionable) information.

For reference, the citation quality values defined in the GEDCOM standard are:
Direct and Primary Evidence
Secondary Evidence
Questionable Reliability of Evidence
Unreliable Evidence or Estimated Data

Almost all tree building programs let you record this alongside the source citation.

Live in Rainham Kent now.was a WW2 evacuee to Kent and always loved the County, not in the same area as evacuated but its a lovely spot .we walk around the corner and its open countryside with orchards and farms. used to have Hop Fields but these no longer grown locally. Wouldn't move back to London at any price although am still a Londoner at heart.

It's funny but I have always thought you were a contemporary, or younger, of mine ...So born 1950/60s

Now find you could be a contemporary of my parents...Both evacuees in WW2.

You , of course, must be some years younger than them ;-)

Well I was only 2 +half when i was evacuated, Went to School for a week with my elder sister and brother so i could be evacuated with the School. Maybe a bit of an oldie now but still young at heart. Not born in the 1950.s but did marry then !
