I have one Albert Edward Pattinson, born Carlisle 22 November 1887. He appears in the subsequent census records until 1901. By 1911 he was living here in New Zealand. He was supposedly the son of Hannah Pattinson, but I think she was really his grandmother. I have been to Carlisle to get his birth certificate, but there was no record of the birth. He was brought up in Whitehaven and I have all that information. Why would he not have a birth certificate and how could he have got a passport? I have tried in vain to get the record - can anyone help?? Janet Smith |

I`d say at a guess that he either wasn`t registered or was registered under a different surname.. |

Do you think he's Ellen's son? |

I have thought he was Ellen's son, but she actually gave birth to a John Key the same year so had to discount that idea! Where did you get Ellen from? I tend to think Albert may have been the son of Ellen's sister, Annie, however she would have only be about 14 at the time, not impossible I know. Ellen married John's father (she was 15) but seemed to dump them both some time later. I have got a lot of information about her and John. Albert is the mystery! |

Thank you for the Carlisle Alberts! I have also looked at those possibilities, but seem to be a no go. |

Have checked the migration lists on FMP and there are no Albert Pattinsons going to New Zealand 1901-1911 |

You mention that you know Albert was already in New Zealand by 1911...have you seen his arrival documents, if so what name did he travel under, and when did he arrive? and who did he travel out there with..? |

No, not that John Key. I have all the info re "my"John Key, but thank you anyway. I have also previously checked migration and couldn't find Albert. I wondered if he came here as a crewman and jumped ship? He was only about 15 though, not sure if that would be a possibility. I have his war service record - served with the NZ Army during WW1- still no birth certificate there! |

Could you please post the information you have re your John Key? |

Have not been able to find an official arrival into NZ, that's why I have wondered if he jumped ship. However, haven't checked that for some time, so should have another look. Albert's "mother" (grandmother??) had died and he would have come to join his "sister" (birth mother???) who was already living in NZ. It is a mystery all right!! (You are a late nighter!!!) |

Thanks Rose, I have several census records for Hannah and also for her and young Albert for 1891. Hannah died in 1900 and Albert was with his "sister" Ellen, in 1901. I'm just wondering if I could search his baptism records? He was living in Whitehaven so was probably christened there. I also have all the information I need at present re Annie - have several census records for her. Thank you for your help. Janet |

How do you know his exact DOB if you haven't got his birth cert? Did he marry and give a father's name on his marriage cert? |
