I've never looked at an English 1911 census, but certainly on the 1901, there's no year of birth mentioned. What appears is George's age of 24.

When sites like Ancestry, etc, report a yob, they just subtract the age from the census year to get 1877, even though it's the wrong year abt 75% of time. They do the same calculation for the Canadian census of 1861, even though the nominal date for that census is 14/1/1861, so the yob is wrong abt 96% of time (but again, the yob doesn't appear - at least not on that census). Once you understand it's just a convention, then it's not really a problem, and it does simplify specifying searches.

Might be a good idea to use mothers name Babara as reference check on future orders, if this one on order isn`t the correct one..........would have thought there would be less chance of George Miller with mother babara being duplicated than George miller with a father of the same name.......only 2 come up on the 1881 in the time frame, and the other one hasn`t a father called George so fingers crossed you`ve got the right one...

Waves to Dee......who`s as nosey as me!!....

ooohh that rhymes...

1881 Census taken on night of 3rd/4th April....so he must have been born after 5th April 1876 and before 2nd april 1877 if

tihe age of 4 is correct on the 1881 census.

1891 census taken 5th/6th April

1901 Census taken 31st March/1st April.

George Report 21 Mar 2010 22:41

If I am on the right track, you are correct that his occupation was Stoker in 1881. presume a Stoker could be a Railway Fireman as the 1891census
shows him as an Engine Driver. (promotion perhaps?)

I thank you for your observation re dates. Unfortunately, too late, for the current application. I wish I'd sought advice earlier.

I''let you know what transpires

'Nosey' BatMansDaughter, yes, you are 100% correct but I'm still swimming in a sea of uncertainty. Just have to wait and see if I get the correct BC

BatMansDaughter

BatMansDaughter Report 21 Mar 2010 22:26

George remember that the census age can be out by nearly 1 full year, if George was born April 28th 1876 then this would show on a census of the birth at 1877....... so I would definately be looking at the 1876 births for him.

these would be my guesses;

Births Sep 1876 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MILLER George Gateshead 10a 902

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Births Dec 1876 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miller George Gateshead 10a 872

His father was a Stoker in 1881... so maybe an occupation check??

George

George Report 21 Mar 2010 22:26

2 of the entries on the Birth Register show 'Gateshead' (both 18760
The other entry (1877) shows 'Durham'

I'm certain his birthplace is Gateshead but as the date of birth is 1876,
I,ve opted for the 1877 because Gateshead is in Durham

George Report 21 Mar 2010 22:20

Yes..his fathers name was George Miller, somewhat predictable!

I believe the 'reference check' has been discontinued

Nickydownsouth

Nickydownsouth Report 21 Mar 2010 22:10

Do you have his fathers name from his marriage cert.? or earlier census.?

If so you can order the cert. with a reference check using fathers name...if its not the same name they will refund £3.00....hence only costing £4.00 a cert. till you get the correct one.

Is there any info on the census {Birthplace} that will help you pinpoint the correct one...have you asked for help on here with that?

If you want some help put up the details and see if anyone can narrow down your search.

George Report 21 Mar 2010 22:02

Thanks for that Nicky. Out of a choice of 3 Birth Certificates
George Miller 1876
George Miller 1876
George Miller 1877 I have applied for 1877.

Keeping my fingers crossed that I'm right (or its£7 down the drain !)

Nickydownsouth

Nickydownsouth Report 21 Mar 2010 21:48

No George..... Any death information is only as reliable as the informant....maybe whoever registered the death/arranged the headstone thought he was a year younger than he actually was...or depending on when in the year his birth was in relation to his date of death, it can alter an age....

His birth cert. would confirm exact date of birth.....census info can be notoriously unreliable....especially with ages...

Nicky

George

George Report 21 Mar 2010 21:42

Grandfather (George Miller) appears in both 1901 and 1911 census
as born 1877.
His death as shown on Headstone was Nov 6 1953 age 77.
It just doesn't add up...I calculate his age at death as 76 or year of birth 1876.

Am I missing something here ?
