I have just contacted someone with a membership number beginning with 2. does that mean he is an 'oldie'? (and probably less like to reply maybe) and am I still a 'newbie' with mine beginning with 9?

Check and see if they have read your pm.

It depends also on how many numbers are in your membership number. The ones I just checked, some have 6 numbers, some 7. So even though some numbers begin with 2 they could be hundreds of thousands apart.

The numbers seem to vary so much, how can you tell if a member is old, middling or new?

The membership numbers run consecutively from the beginning of the site. There was a thread on, I think, General the other week asking about the lowest membership number

#1 was one of the founders of the Friends Reunited and then Genes Connected (as it was then) sites.

GR never gets rid of members, so they cannot re-use membership numbers.

The higher the number the more recent the member ................ they're well over 10 million now.

Of coruse, even an "oldie" may not have found their way to the Community boards until recently ............ especially as many of them would have been free members, and free members cannot post on theses boards. They may have upgraded to Standard Membership recently, but they still keep their original number.
