im trying to find my nan her name was nellie bell in 1934 she had my dad phillip bell he ended up in a place for the disabled called chailey heritage in east sussex

i know he was born ar 21 wilton road shirley southampton
this is all the info i have as my dad knew nothing about nellie

From the index it looks like she had him out of wedlock, so she may well have got married at a later date and would now be known by another surname, have you tryed to find a marriage for her?

As you have the address, it should be possible to search the electoral register. There might just be other family members living there. Either someone here will live near enough to have a look or you can contact the relevant place and ask for a search (there may be a charge).

my brother has the bith/ certiv but i have ordered my own. i cant get to the place to look as i live to far away.

how easy would of been for her to know about chailey heritage if she lived in southampton?

Was your dad adopted? if so their should be a record of the adoption, If he is still living then he may be able to get the adoption papers and they could give more info to help the search

he has passed away now, but he never said he was adopted as chailey heritage was like a bording school but it was a charity run place dont know if it is now

Your best bet would be the electoral register to start with or even try and see if records are avalable from chailey heritage, Have you tryed to Google for info

just Googled and they have a web site with a forum and contact details

The Chailey Heritage School still exists. You could write to them - they may still have records from that time and might be able to find a bit more info for you.

i have contacted chailey heritage they said when they moved biuldings alot of the old files where lost . i even tryed wrighting to a man that delt with the records but never got anything back of him.

I'd really start with the electoral register - it might not help, but you never know. And your father's birth cert should confirm his mother's name.

I replied to a request re Nellie Bell earlier on today saying that I would look at the electoral registers in Southampton Library.

Sandra, I'm sorry, but "just trying to find help any where" is all very well, but there are rules here.

When you post the *same request* on *two different boards*, different people will see them simultaneously -- and in all likelihood duplicate efforts. This is simply not fair.

I was one of the people who did some research on your behalf in the other thread. I wasn't reading the Tips board at that very moment. But you can be assured that people do read the various boards here, and that posting the same thing on different boards is not going to get you answers that you won't get by following the rule and posting on only one board.
