I have just been in contact with someone who has given me access to their tree and they have in excess of 85,000!!!!

They are just names to them.................I bet they havn't researched all of them

Check out everything before you add them to your tree.

When I first started I added a name which I did'nt research and it led me up the garden path, so just make sure who you are researching is really your relly.

Take it with a pinch of salt. A tree that size won't have been fully researched.

If the family/person you are interested in is a direct ancestor of the tree owner, ask them for more info. If, on the other hand, the rellie you're seeking info on has a tentative relationship to the tree owner note the ancestry and check it out for yourself, as it is possible the tree owner got the info from another researcher who has backed up their info with cert's PR's etc.

I have only been doing my tree about 12 months and already have about 1000 as I have worked lots of hours and spent lots of money on getting the majority of it verified, there are names on there that I havn't compleatly researched such as siblings names from censuses that I havn't needed to look into yet as I am trying to work out the direct lines only at the moment. I'm sure that once I have been doing it a few years I could have many many names and numbers if I wanted too but at the moment that isn't my aim but I can see how somebody with lots of time on their hands or unlimited cash could do it although I doubt that the majority of the people on the tree would fulfil my clasification of "related".

All that said I have found a couple of people on here that have done one name studies, clusters, whole village records transcripts etc, have 1000s of names which is all coroberated and yet not related to more than a handful on their tree but wonderful information never the less.

I wouldn't just add it all wholesale to you tree, ask a few more questions, do a bit more digging yourself and make a decision based on all of that as to if their information is likely to be sound or not but don't just discount the information because it seems impossible, you just never know.

I have a rellie in someone's tree on ancestry who has over 11,000 names and I thought that was a lot. Mind you they do go back to Alfred the great and beyond of course as well as being related to modern royals. My lot don't appear to be attached to said Royals :o( Or indeed anyone else on the tree.


Unless the person is doing a one-name study or village study I would be very sceptical!

I won't be adding any to my tree...I have already seen some 'guesswork' and as I have the certificates I know some of them are wrong.

i thought i had a lot and have taken to explaining why when people contact me.
When i started i began my husbands tree as well,it is attached to mine.So it looks like i have over 1000 people in my family,over half are my husbands!

Between my OH's family and mine I have around 1100. Loads of certificates documents and photos to corroborate the research I, and family members, have done. One branch of my mother's family has been extensively researched and are an extremely interesting family. The information we have has been collected and proven by "cousins" from around the world.

I have about 1,000 - but that's my tree, my OH's tree, a bit of OH's cousin's tree, and one of OH's aunty's tree - as well as my son's tree on my ex-husband's side.

It's a very "wide" tree going back to about 1800 on most lines and a bit further on other lines.

My One Name Study is offline as they are not all related so I don't want to add them all.

I have been doing my tree for 7 years and have only got 177 names but if your family is not large you can't get that many names for eg. My mum was an only child her mother was an only child my dad only had 2 sisters 1 brother one sister had no children and the other only 1 so it does not get that big

that sounds like the man who got in touch with me the other day , when i tried to find the relation in common there was on sign of her on the tree, and he wanted to see my tree / i pressed the delete botton.

I have in excess of one and a half million in my tree going back over 5 hundred years, and didn’t have to research any of them as I was with all of them at some time. Just off out, as soon as it gets dark for a nice drink of fresh blood.

I have had a problem with people plundering my tree even though they can't show how they are related.
There is a woman on Ancestry who has 'stolen' my grandmothers family and some of my photgraphs and although i have asked her three times she has never come back to me to say how she is related.
Strangely when challenged she has removed the paternal side of my grandmothers family but I have only just challenged her on the maternal side so hopefully that will be cleared up soon.
I have started challenging people to tell me how they think our trees are related before I open up my tree to them.

Also I am a stickler for research and proof - especially after I found an aunt who was down as a son on one census!
On my ancestry tree you can easily spot the people that are definites as I have the certificates (at leats birth certs) to prove they are related. Lord knows how much time and money it must have cost if all 85,000 people have been fully researched

I have a canny few, but it's taken 30 years of graft to get them!!

I also made the mistake of letting someone view my tree some time ago, within an hour he copied the lot i was not happy to say tthe least just a name collector to me, came across this persons tree last week on the web by chance got my name and my family and also another daughters name against me that i did not even know i had ,it must of been an immaculate conception and a pain free childbirth. so much for peoples research.

I have 750, mostly direct ancestor's.
I recently gave some-one access to my tree to look up a potential relative, a great, great, great grandfather's sister. I was shocked to discover that they copied a large chunk of my tree including my step kids and my husbands ex wife. I mean how ridiculous! They are not relations. And before you ask, no they did not ask permission and I doubt they removed them even when I asked because they appeared in Hot Matches on some-one elses tree.
you can never be to careful when giving tree access!!!!

I tend to think that anyone with 85,000 in their tree is just a name collector and not a serious family history researcher.
I have just over 2000 on my tree, Thats about 7 years of work. I haven't even started my Irish dads side yet either! That'll be fun :-)
