Lindsay, It's such a shame that you don't know the name of Percy Mercers wife, the following divorce records are on National Archives. No way of knowing if it's the right Percy or not !.

Appellant: Ethel Maud Mercer. Respondent: Percy William Mercer. Type: Wife's petition for divorce
Covering dates 1927

If you can give me some leads about what I'm looking for, I will check locally if you want.
I was in Cheriton earlier today.

I'm willing to help, but am unsure what I'm looking for at the moment, ...Lol

You've done well to unravel this so far, so now we need to untangle the rest of it.

Send a message direct if you think I can help in the area.

Sorry Gwyn, but I live in Wales. The name Norris - my gggrandmother Catherine Mcgee ran off with this man called Percy Mercer fron London I assume. They left their partners and children and ran away to Birmingham but got caught. He served 6 months in a prison(where?) and when he got out they ran away to Folkestone and changed their names to NORRIS! See why I am so confused and can,t find anyone.Even my mother had no idea her mother(Annie( had changed her name from Tettersell to Norris. Its only my searching that has found out! I know nothing about Percy at all but they did have 2 more children christine and joan born in Folkestone.I dont think Catherine and Percy married.

Thanks ozibird, I did start to wonder if Rose had become Hilda. It looks likely doesnt it? Also, my mum never spoke of a Rose so maybe thats it.

Do you live near Folkestone?
You could check electoral lists at the library, if you know an address to search in Cheriton or Folkestone. That might show full names.
Where does the surname NORRIS fit in?... I can't see a link to that name.

Yes, Hilda did marry ,but I dont know his name. She also had a daughter with her husband. Hilda was raped by her stepfather in Folkestone and had a boy but he went to Australia and was never heard from again. Do you think Hilda may have changed her name?

Lindsay

Lindsay Report 3 Mar 2009 21:07

thanks so much. My grandmother was Annie Hall nee Tettersell born in 1911 in edmonton. All her family came from here. Her mother ran off with a man named Percy Mercer and they went to Cheriton and Folkestone. My grandmother and her siblings followed when they each got to 16. The sister was called Hilda and she was older than Annie, thats all I know. They all changed their names to Norris in Folkestone .All this was about 1915 to 1920.Other children were Alfred 1909, Alice 1913 Christine born < and Joan 1919.My grandmothers husband came from Elham., William Edward Hall.Sorry so many surnames, this is why I am so confused! HOpe this helps.
