Does anyone else think this site would benefit by adding files to sort your messages and hot matches into?

My tree is very large now, and I have contacts for various branches of my tree and it would be beneficial if I could sort them into files.

Likewise, my hot matches refer to different surnames in my tree.

I was just wondering if other members agree with me.

I have just sent a message to GR to ask if they have any plans to add files to the site. I'll let you know the response, when I get one.

That is a good idea - at the last count I had about 55 pages of messages on this site. A lot of them have really valuable information on them but it's easy to lose track of them.

As you say, it would be good if you could have files, then you could sort them by surname. Sometimes, say I have three contacts all called John, I can't remember which John fits into which side of my tree.

it might also be useful to be able to put attachments on here

maybe it'd make the server explode due to the extra space it'd take up

but it'd very helpful to be able to send people attachments especially when asking for help so you could show people what you've got already

I assume you mean folders, not files. I'd appreciate folders, one for each ancestor.

See what others think and maybe we can lobby Genes.

Very good idea, I have about 2 pages of messages and about 10 pages of contacts. Very hard to keep track of. I wonder if they would make folders for us. Would take time seem as so their is about 9 million members (check login page of this website).

yes i think that folders would be a good idea , i spend a lot of time searching through my info i have stored and it can take up to much time which is wasted time .
can u tell me how i can print out one persons or imedeate family from the ist page of the tree that u see. i ask this as it now has a gray printed background which my printer does not like and u cant see the print clearly . but a paer copy of all that info would be good . M E

Yes, several of us suggested the idea of folders about 18 months ago when GR asked for suggestions for improvements. They decided against it at the time, presumably because it was not cost effective, and concentrated on other upgrades.

Don't forget also that each time GR upgrade the site, there is a deluge of complaints from those who see it as a change for the worse.

Well I am still waiting for a response from GR. Yes I have noticed the complaints at each upgrade of GR. But it usually settles down, once people have got used to the new formats. I'm finding it OK to use, just have this gripe about sorting my contacts and hot matches out.

Lets hope they will change there mind. Perhaps they may take note if everyone contacts them requesting it....So all you members out there, if you think it is a good idea - get in touch with them.

This idea would be SO helpful. I have taken to using a note book reminding me of who is the contact with whom but to be able to do this on the site would be good.

I contacted GR last week re putting up some info re how to find your thread again for newbies and, after I had sent them some examples of folk who hadn't a clue and were missing out on info, they finally agreed to look at the problem. I'll give them a couple of weeks and then nag again!

Hope they listen to this idea.

Good idea.

I know there's a space on the contacts page for each contact where you can add a bit of info - but I find it so frustrating not being able to sort them - or find them easily ...

I've tried the star method, which is useful to identify the contacts which have good links with my tree. But folders would be much better to research specific relations and go straight to the people I have contacted. I do note with each contact the relation with which we are connected to, but yu have to open each contact to find them.

Another thing I find very annoying, is that it doesn't give the surname of the GR members until you go into the messages. I have quite a few with the same christian names and can't Identify them until I click on them. Very frustrating.

I have quite a few contacts with which it is inconclusive as to whether we are connected through our trees and with which one or both of us need to obtain further information before we can be sure. This often takes time, months even, so I have to go looking for them later. This becomes difficult when you have a long list.

The folder suggestion is a good idea and would certainly help me with my ever decreasing memory.

One thing I miss with the new re-vamped site, (unless its just me who can’t see how to do it), is that you can no longer sort contacts into some kind of order, e.g., descending star rating.
This made it much easier and quicker to find my most useful and most used contacts.

Is it just me or can you still do this? Help!!!!!

Ryan

Ryan Report 7 Feb 2009 17:51

I don't believe you an, you can search for contacts by their name.

David

David Report 7 Feb 2009 18:56

Thanks Ryan for reassuring me that its not just me!

I don’t have as many pages of contacts as Kate but it takes a long time trawling through them to find the person I want.

Jim/Thelma, you are stars. But how did you work it out what to do?
I know where to come in future for help.
I bet you both are not in any way remotely connected to my tree - both much too clever.
Many thanks; this is the first time I have used the community site and I can see why it seems to be so popular.
