I agree with you.

I have no doubt that the site will eventually decide 'the time is right' ....As in the initial demand has dropped off...And will include the 1911 in a subscription service, so reducing the cost considerably.

Around the same time I expect Ancestry will get the 1911 online.

As someone who had to pay 'extra' to get the 1841 online from British Origins before it was available on Ancestry I am very used to paying 'extra' for an early view :(

You only pay once to look at a transcipt or orginal, the transcripts are kept in my records and the orginals they are prompting you to save them to your computer then open them. So you can revisit them as many times as you like for no additional cost.

It does seem a bit steep but considering you pay £3 a time to get certs you think might be your relatives checked then an extra £7 if they find the right one, the charges to view are really not too bad, espically if you have a common surname and have found it diffcult to pin down which 'john smith' or in my case 'john green' born x date maybe your relative, with his fathers name the census considerably narrowed down my options.

The thing is this is new information so it will be pricey till the intial costs of processing it all have been recouped.

Cost is far too high, needs to come down to a half, preferably a third.

Also being pay per view it comes with all the disadvantages of that method of payment - you don't know if you have found the correct details till you pay up - very very expensive if you keep looking at the wrong one.

Hi everyone, I may be being thick but where is the 1911 Census? I can't find it on this site, are you all are using a different website for it?

I emailed FMY to ask about being able to search under the sex of a person and this is the reply I received:-

Thank you for contacting 1911census.co.uk.

Only the basic search functions were available at launch.

'The advanced search functions, such as use of wildcards, variants, address search
and searches without surnames, will be tested after the service is publicly released
in 2009. a search option for the sex of the person may be introduced in the future
as well. we will notify you of any such decision via email as soon as we can.'

I have had a few pm's asking for the instructions for the search method. It is one I used that helped me and I was just passing on the tip to help others. Of course it is not 100% but has helped me a lot finding my ancestors in the 1911 census and perhaps not waste a lot of credits on wrong searches.
You can change round the search method and put a sibling in the search with another sibling living in the household or change the parents round checking the mother's name and the father's name with the children. It all helps and may give you some information to help with your research. Good luck Irene ps do not forget there is a 10% off of the cost of the credits if you purchase them through FMP.

Feeling very pleased I'd just found the name of a great uncle I tried to do the same for my grandmother to find missing siblings but can't find her family anywhere, I tried possible nicknames, then tried searching the road I'm pretty sure they lived in but it only had the odd numbered houses doubled up (2 entries for each odd numbered house) and they lived in an even numbered house so it looks like I'll never find them.

I tried her method and found the name of one of my grandfather's brothers, I thought there was another one but had no idea of his name.

Just to say that if you buy 280 units, they are valid for 365 days..............

Make sure you clear the search (not just delete) form before each search as it seemed to cause probs if not!
If you have unusual surname then just put that in and look at list to pick out memebers of your tree.
To my suprise lots of mine moved and were not where I had expected and I could not find some at all so I guess the search facility is not too good at the moment.

I found my Aunt 'n' Uncle....with Parents.

I now know that my Mother (b.1914 West Brom) Parents were living in Walsall before her birth.

Yet another problem solved....

I bought 280 credits and then more...I seem to have been lucky....sorry!! Amongst my finds....

My 2x gt grandmother emigrated to Edmonton, Canada in the early 1900s but I haven't been able to find her on the passenger lists...she was still in England in 1911 so that has narrowed down the time as to when she left.

My gt grandparents had another child who sadly died which we didn't know about !

My 2x gt uncle and aunt in Dover were fostering a little girl aged 3. I have found a possible contact (a bit of a long shot though) in the GR search engine who I have pm'd hoping they are still members.

First name searches would be great, though I would settle for wild cards which would also be of enormous help.

I think we wouldn't mind the cost so much if it had the same search flexibility as Ancestry. Having paid the 45 pounds for early access, I feel lucky we can even access the census this early, especially after TNA was dooming it all for so long along with the privacy argument.

I have found 90% of my relatives, though am having trouble finding women who married 1901-1911 as there is no first name search. Ditto for kids who were fostered out. My grandmother was adopted and she was under her adoptive name, which of course I already knew. So easy for me....

But if you don't....again - first name searches, which could be limited by requiring year of birth, and/or birthplace (county as a minimum).

Also I look forward to the age parameter being stretched to 5 years +/-.

The pluses are; year of marriage actually helped me isolate one family.

'suchafool' - can we help with your grandmother? Perhaps post some details?

I have just searched the 1911 census i have been waiting for this to answer a question where was my gran in the time she was born and fostered out which was in 1912 thinking that the 1911 census would give me the answers i am so so disapointed .... So now i will have to draw a line and say thats that i will never know just be grateful with the info i have found over the years.

Sorry if I sound thick but I don't understand your search method. Does it only work for small communities, or can you also apply the method to towns and cities?

On the site there is a list of the area's that are not available yet, also Hamlets that will never be available, due to damage.

Just hope your credits are not on a time limit, but apparently it's being updated all the time....roll on Durham lol
