I gave you all the info I could find..........

Not sure what else you are looking for..............

Can I just say that I don't understand your unwillingness to accept that John was dead by the time one of his children married..........

Being dead doesn't alter the fact that he was that person's father.................

My father was dead when I married........but his name is on my marriage cert, simply because he WAS my father....

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 6 Aug 2008 21:28

Joyce , the fathers name is quoted on marriage certs if known. what didn't always happen tho was that the father was recorded as deceased. Depended on how the question was asked when the marriage was being arranged, ie "fathers name" to which an honest answer would be given , but not ventured on that with by the way he now dead!!.
for instance:-
My maternal grandfather married for the first time in 1898 and his dads name & occupation is on the cert.. He was widowed in 1905 and married my gran in 1909.on that cert his dads name & occupation is again shown exactly as per his previous marriage cert but this time the word deceased is added.I assumed then that great grandfather died between 1898 and 1909 and spent time a 2 certs buying trying to get his death. Only when Freebmd did an update and i was looking for all records for his widows name did I see she remarried in 1894!! so then I looked again for grt grandfathers death to find he died in 1884 aged 37 .no wonder I didn't find him on the 1891 or 1901 census !! If only the fact was recorded on that first marrige record it would have saved me loads of time & money!! trying to get further on that line.

Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 6 Aug 2008 17:27

If he was named on the marriage cert and it did not have deceased written against it I would not take that as meaning he was still alive. My mother named her father on the marriage cert without putting "deceased" - he had died when she was 4 years old!

So if Charlotte remarried in 1853 then John couldnt have been a witness on their sons wedding cert of 1869.Or have I read the info wrong??

Ericthered

Ericthered Report 6 Aug 2008 16:07

Sorry to say this, but.............how can you be sure that the person named as a witness was not just someone with the same name as the groom's father?

There is, as far as I am aware, no info on marriage certs about the witnesses.............only their names
