Mary Myers Jagger 9 months

The clue to the mothers maiden name could be in the name of this child

Virginia, as Reggie says, you can look up births, marriages and deaths on freebmd - its free - Ive had a quick look and Reg a surprising number of Uriah Jaggers - lol. But this one in Wakefield seems likely. Marriages arent in couples but in alphabetical order so it may not mean this Eliza married the Uriah listed. What you should do is look for their childs birth on freebmd and then buy that certificate for £7 fromGRO online which will give his mothers maiden name.

Why dont you go to freebmd and have a little practice looking up some of your people?

Why not try and find some of the info yourself? It really is very easy....and much more fun for you than just having other people provide the info.......

Go on............give it a go..............

I agree Reg

I started off with no Ancestry access but used to trot down to the local library & use their computers.

It took me months to realise that I could have a 14 day free trial & after the 2 weeks were up, I realised I could not live without it so I kept it for a while on monthly subscription.

Although this is a more expensive way of doing things, I found it a good idea to "find my feet" before committing myself to an annual subscription.

aww reggie believe me I have done loads myself and always check the information that I am given... I just get so confused when surrounded with all the paper work I think I need to be a little more organised. I also get stuck when trying to trace the maiden name of the female line.. please I have spent hours on this and I really value peoples help.. thank you xx

Ginny

Ginny Report 19 May 2008 11:37

yes I wish someone would write a book giving step by step instructions. for people like me. I find people on on census then can't find them again for another 30 years. I have so many papers am just getting confused.. but you have all been a great help but I have only asked for about 4 names out of the loads that I have got... Thanks.... slowly getting the jist.xx

Virginia, check out Tips for Newbies on here and may be concentrate on sorting out the info you already have - buy a program to use off line, rather than just the GR one - you can buy the Who do you think you are Family Tree maker program for only about £6 now from play.com including 14 days free ancestry.

Im not criticising you personally but having other people doing the finding means you dont really get the thrill of the research and as you say, going so quickly you are becoming confused because you arent having to take it in yourself to work out the next step..

Get a decent family tree program, as mentioned above, start filling it in with all the information you have already gathered and then sit back and see what is the next piece of jigsaw to do.

Ill nudge the tips for newbies

I find that if I find things for myself they seem to gel more into the tree I keep in my brain.

I've been doing this for 9 years now and yesterday I found my 3x great grandfather on the 1851 census. It was a complete accident as I was looking for his wife's father. I didn't find the wife's father but I found her brother living next door to my 3x.

P.S. Heather's tips are wonderful and occasionally when stuck I refer back to them just to remind myself of other avenues to follow.

Janet, Ive still not found my GGPx4 marriage or baptisms - scream - and I live only a couple of miles from the little village churchyard where they are buried. I shall treat myself to a big dinner or something when the day comes that they turn up. The earliest I have on them is a settlement cert in 1760 which must have been shortly after they married - but no marriage anywhere in about 40 parishes so far :(
