Janet 693215 Report 31 Mar 2008 17:23

Neiven may not be Elizabeths maiden name. A lot of my scots female relatives used their own maiden names after they were married so it may be Jain's maiden name.

Do you have approximate dates for these people? The names are not sufficiently unusual for us to be able to identify them without some idea of time-scale

What a miserable old so and so your brother is! I share all the certs etc that I buy, with all my relatives, first cousins, second cousins, old uncle Tom Cobley and all. But then I am not a male!

Hi Katrina

Your father's birth cert will show the date of his parents marriage.

I had some credits left on SP so had a quick look for a death of Sarah Muir - there were 23 in Glasgow. This one seems a good possibility: 1993 Sarah Muir age 77 previous name Queen. ref: is 611/00 0523 There are no images so it would have to be ordered - they cost £10 to order from SP. Check with your father first to see if he thinks that date sounds about right before ordering it though :-)

Katrina did you grandparents die in Scotland? If they did their death certs will give their ages & also will show their parents names.

If they died in England or Wales, death cert will give their age or date of birth.

Look for clues, are they in any old photos that you can roughly date? Weddings are good ones.

Is there anyone alive that you can ask for information? Girls in the family often do the house clearance & keep old certs tucked in a box in the loft.

If you can't get to Edinburgh yourself, keep a check on the boards for someone who is going & is willing to do some research for you.

Don't give up, this may take time but you will get there.

No marriages come up on search on ScotlandsPeople up to 1932.

You will have to contact the Scottish GRO to get the marriage cert.

SylviaInCanada Report 12 Feb 2008 22:50

Ok

Have you looked for the marriage certificate of John Muir and Sarah Queen?

That woudl give you the names of their fathers, and thus a lead back to the 1901 census and then further back.

You say your dad was born 1942 ......... what makes you think his paretns got married in the 1920s? Was he the youngest child?

Could they have got married later than you think?

If you know of any relative who would have been alive at the time of the 1901 census.....post the details, and give people a chance to help.

You might get lucky...........

The snag with Scottish bmd info is that it is only available on pay-to-view.

Have you thought of getting some units for scotlands people? I've never had need of it, but I believe that you can get units for only £6.00
