Thanks Reg

I'll look into that. Unfortunately I can't read what his fathers’ job was. I could read my great grandmothers fathers’ occupation which was an optician. I'm guessing that was a pretty good job in those days. What do you think?

Birth registration was not compulsory until 1875...........

As you say you know his father's name............can't you find them together on a census?

1881 is free...........and can be searched on Ancestry by occupation.........his father's will be on the marriage cert.

You might then be able to find the marriage of his parents...........

Thanks for that. I have his marriage certificate but aren't sure of where Patrick was born. I was under the understanding from cenus records that he was born in or around Whitechapel though I couldn't find anything for that precise place, I did find others around the area. He was born cira 1870

You can never be sure until you get the cert.
If it's after 1911 and a maiden name is shown you could look for the marriage of a known person to someone with the correct maiden name....but it wouldn't be found if it was the bride;s 2nd marriage.
What you CAN do is order the certificate stating the father's name as a checking point....then you only pay part of the payment if it's wrong....you receive no certificate.

Even this has pitfalls....eg. If you knew the man was Alfred but he is named as Fred on the certificate, you won't be sent it.

I hope someone can help me. I'm trying to find my great grandfathers birth certificate and although I've come up with a few possabilities I'd like to know if there is anywhere I can cross reference them with parents names. I'm sure of his fathers name but not so sure on his mothers name.
