Could it be that his father was a Wolmsley and his mother an Ashton ?? Have you looked for a potential marriage?

Have you checked 1841 census for John Ashton to see if any daughters were with him?

No guarantee that this is the right one - but found it on FreeBMD:

Births Jun 1842 (>99%)
WALMSLEY John Liverpool 20 512

1841 - John and Margaret Ashton have a couple of children with them - including Martha - then aged 11. No guarantee that Martha is John's mother but it's a possibility.

Hi Slinky, John Walmsley and Julia née Brannan were my wife's great grandmother's parents in law and we visited Ormskirk in the summer in order to visit their grave and others in the same cemetery. If you have any documentation that you could share with us it would be greatly appreciated and we may be able to assist you with our branch of the family. My email address is taylor_pg(at)ntlworld.com.

Thank you in advance.
