Hi, i am very new to this and dont know if anyone can help me or advise me. i have 3 problems.
Firstly my grandad recently died,he always wanted to know about a baby brother born and died before him. All we know if the baby,a boy, lived 6 weeks and we think died of "convulsions". My grandad was named Arthur bell, born feb 23rd 1920.The baby was most likely born 1918-1920 near hoffleet stow or bicker or possibly horncastle near Boston in lincolnshire. The parents names are Arthur bell 1899 and Alice Maud sarah fairweather Izzard 1899. Alice died aged 27years when my grandad was only 7 from malnutrition and influenza, she was, we believe buried in swineshead near boston churchyard but there is no gravestone and the church has no vicar. The previous vicar said there are no records of burials in the churchyard (how can this be?). My grandad would have loved so much to know where his brother and mother were laid to rest. Can anybody help me?

My next problem is that since losing my grandad my nan would love to know about the baby brother born not long after her. We know nothing more than that. The babys parents were George ward 1899 and Ella Cox born september 1897 (7a 556) , the baby boy would have been born most likely in 1924. My nan Joan Bell was born december 1922. They lived in Lincolnshire around Old leake, swineshead, boston. We know he was buried but nothing more. How can we find his birth/death and where he was buried?

If anyoone can help in any way it would mean so very much to my nan and my family and would be very very much appreciated.

Sam

The only Bell child with mother's maiden name of Izzard coming up on FreeBMD is Arthur.

The burial records for the church will probably be held at the local register office, try contacting them. I have checked the NBI and Alice isn't listed on that, I can't check for the child as you don't know his name.

Sorry, I can't help with your nan's brother, my subscription to Ancestry has run out so I can't check the full indexes. You will need to find his birth first though.

Hi Deborah,

I've been doing a little digging through births and deaths for your granddad's baby brother.

I found 5 infant deaths and by cross-checking with births, was able to elliminate 4, leaving only James A Bell. His death was registered but I haven't been able to find his birth ref. I'm wondering if his parents didn't register his birth at all.

Name: James A Bell
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1918
Year of Registration: 1918
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
Age at Death: 0
District: Grimsby
County: Humberside, Lincolnshire
Volume: 7a
Page: 654

If you decide to order this cert, you could always put a ref check on his parents names.

James A Bell born Grimsby was born to a mother with maiden name Smith, so that's not the one.

Here's the marriage:

Izzard Alice M S F Bell Boston 7a 967

Perhaps the baby was born an Izzard?

Looks like one of Alice's brother's died too:

Births Jun 1903
IZZARD Arthur James G P Boston 7a 434

Deaths Sep 1903
Izzard Arthur 0 Boston 7a 211

Perhaps the story was a little muddled and it was Alice's brother that died at 6 weeks?

Hi all,
thanks again for yet more help!

I have been emailed tonight by a relative who is trying to help, he insists family member have said a baby BOY was born BEFORE my grandad Arthur bell (1920).

It is possible the baby was named ERNEST
?BELL ?IZZARD

i am hopeful about the suggestion for my nans baby brother,CYRIL WARD 1924 , i will order a death certificate once i find out how/where/how much etc?

I have no clues re finding my grandmothers grave (alice maud sarah fairweather izzard), possibly swineshead churchyard, near boston, lincolnshire likely unmarked. I guess i will have to locate the new church warden and turn up at his front door and plead for help ;-) My grandads ashes are being held in the hope we can put him to rest with his mother or brother.

To assist on this
Arthur & Alice were married Q4 1918
Son Arthur was born Feb 1920
This leaves a very small window where an elder sibling could be born as Bell.
I did find a possibilty but the baby's name wasn't Ernest so could someone else please have a look & give an opinion?
Thanks

Hi Deborah

If you are going to order Cyril Ward's cert...best to go with birth as would give you details on Mum / Dad. Death certs I have received don't go into details on parentage and only list name of person providing details.

You can order on-line from the GRO or write direct to the registry office in the county.

Another thought on this
My 1920's deaths are not in the churchyard but at the local cemetery. The local council should be able to check this for you.

Also thanks Rose

Just a thought but i suppose alice could have been pregnant when they married? That would allow a baby to be born bell before my grandad.

I cant believe it but i think i found my grandads brother...i wish i could share this news with him !!!
ERNEST A BELL died age 0 Boston 7a 669 mother maiden name ISSARD ...it says issard not IZZARD so maybe thats the confusion?? Does anyone think this may be him?? Is there anyway to find out who the parents of someone was without paying for a birth certificate> I just want to be doubly sure....it seems alice must have been pregnant when they married, perhaps the baby was premature also?? Time will tell, thanks everyone for your help.....i think maybe i have found both babies....now i have th uphill struggle of finding where the babies were buried (any hints on where to begin please??) and where my grandads mother is buried

That must be him. One of Alice's siblings is listed as Issard on FreeBMD.

I think it does say Izzard and not Issard. Look at the other S instances on the page.

I think you would need to order the death cert. to see where he died and then look for the nearest cemetary.
