any help appreciated. I have paternalgrandads birth certificate, George William Orridge born 1892 to William Orridge (1855 born Leics)and a widow, Ellen (1855)(late Wilkes formerly Siddaway). I have found William in 1891 with Ellen 3 stepchildren and a joint baby called Lily. The only possible sighting I have in 1901 is William living on his own in lodgings saying he was single and no sight of the rest of them, nor my grandad who would have been 9. I know grandad ran away from home at 16 but surely not 9. Secondly trying to find a marriage between my maternal great grandfather Fred Kidger and Ruth?. He was born 1865 and she was born 1868. In 1891 they were married and their eldest child was 5. Incidently is there an art to finding marriages. I've not found any on Ancestry that I have searched for.

Taking 2nd mystery first. No art to finding marriages, you just need to look in the right place, as with finding anything. ancestry civil reg is the same info as Freebmd, and is not complete, but does have the advantage that you put in a name and it comes up with all the entries for that name. The complete marriage index IS on ancestry, but you need to check each page of each quarter of each year, which is timeconsuming. if you've done this and not found it, its possible that the marriage cert copy never reached the GRO in which case you'd need to contact the relevant local register office - start with the one nearest where they are on census/where first child was born. If no joy, then its possible that they never married. nell

1st mystery People missing on a census are often either mistranscribed or just somewhere you don't expect to find them. Have you tried looking using just first name, age and place of birth? nell

Thank Helen, I'll try just using the first name but I'm not hopeful. As for the ancestry civil reg is that actually on the ancestry site. I've just done the looking on every quarter which is laborious if you have ten possible years to go through.

Hello Zoe, Fred is on the 1901 census, married to his second wife Sarah. Ruth died in 1895. I can't find their marriage either. I particularly want to find both of them, because I believe both wives were related to each other

Meduck

Meduck Report 26 Feb 2006 16:29

Yes Zoe, thats them. I need to know if Ruth or Sarahs maiden name was Preston because when Ruth died, her death was registered as Kidger-Preston and so was the birth of Harry who was born in the quarter just before she died. However you'll see that Harrys name was back to Kidger on the 1901 census. Apparently any subsequent children were named Kidger-Preston (although apprently not on the census) so I have some relatives called Kidger, some called Kidger-Preston and one who justcalled himself Preston and no-one seems to know why!

Hi Thanks for the marriage find, I've just been on ancestry trying to find Rebeccas and Fred births as suggested, no trace of them either, even thought I know rebeccas birth was Oct 1893 (shes my grandmother). I do know Freds mothers surname was Preston do you suppose he just decided to use it from time to time. Its weird
