Ancestry suggests that Walter 1908 married May Jones in West Ham in 1933.

In 1939 they were at 35 Lodge Avenue, Barking, Essex, and he was a lab assistant and part-time air raid warden.
Two closed records with them, one of which will be their son born 1938 Romford.

That Walter has middle initial A in 1939, and DOB 18 Jan 1908.

May died in West Ham in 1959.

This is probably his death:

Ada would have been 51 years old - not impossible if she'd been giving birth regularly up to that point, but unlikely I would have thought - as she hadn't

The first census was taken in 1841 so you should be able to follow the family back that far.
Is that the Brooke family tree - sometimes you need to buy certificates to prove something. For English and Welsh bmds you can find the refs from 1837 on freebmd and you can buy the certs from the GRO.
For Guernsey records you may pick up some on Family Search - also free.

Many libraries in the UK offer free access to Ancestry - this might help you in your research.

Thank you so much for all of your replies, you are amazing. I am still finding it difficult to find the information you have so generously shared with me.

Reading through the census lots, do you think that is the Broome family tree? Can you give me any tips on how to research it. x
