ArgyllGran Report 1 Jun 2024 11:27

In 1901 census Samuel Owens was tenant farmer at Tanhouse farm, while Wiliam T George was at the Hole Farm.

This newspaper report of the burial of the second Baron Bateman in 1901 confirms they were tenants on the Shobdon estate:

. . . . . . . of the Hereford Times last week. The church, dedicated to St. John the Evangelist adjoins the Court, and the late Peer was the patron of the living attached, held by his brother, the Hon. and Rev. Arthur Allen Bateman Hanbury. It is a cruciform building, and was erected about the year 1753 on the site of former edifice. It has a monument to the memory of the previous Lord Viscount Bateman. Profound respect and sympathy was displayed in the county generally, and the little village of Shobdon bore a very sorrowful aspect. The funeral took place at half-past two, and the ceremony was a very impressive one. The coffin, heavily draped in purple, and covered with beautiful wreaths, was removed from the saloon where it had lain to the church and afterwards to the grave side on a wheeled bier. There was a coronet coat [of] arms [on ?] top together with the following inscription : William Bateman Bateman-Hanbury, Second Baron, born July 28th, 1826, died November 30th, 1901. There were ten bearers, as follows ; Messrs Jenkins (Ladycourt),Williams (Brome), Williams (Covrnkcpc). George (The Hole), Wintour (Hill Home), Powell (The Farm), Bright (Ladycourt), Jenkins, junr., Owen (Tanhouse), and W. A. Morgan (Ladycourt).

They were all tenants on the Shobdon estate. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Chief mourners included Captain the Hon. William Spencer Bateman Hanbury, who succeeds to the perrape. Major the Hon. Enward Hanbury, the Hon. Charles Hanbury (sons), Prebendary the Hon. A. Bateman (brother), Mr Robert Foster, Mr John Wood and S. Hill Wood (son-in-law), Mr Arthur Davenport ..... . . [and so on]

ArgyllGran Report 31 May 2024 21:17

His occupation was farm labourer, as shown on the full version of the record posted by ErikaH at 17:10.

(I don't have a sub to FMP to enable me to see the full details online, but she does.)

He was working for Samuel Owens on Hole Farm, which was part of Shobdon Court estate.
Samuel was probably a tenant of the owner of Shobdon Court.

The Bateman family owned Shobdon Court for several generations, and still owned it in 1921:

Again Thank you everyone for all this information.
Interesting to see a son Daniel born 1928 and the marriage and death.
The school records are probably correct, John had a sister Emma. Not sure why they would be at different schools maybe the age but seems right..
The 1939 Census seems right and he could have moved to Worcester, I dont know if he as a farm Labourer but they changed occupations a lot and his father James was a farm labourer. I dont know who Irene Edith is though.

Argyll/gran-1921 Census John Adams is interesting could be him. I will look into Shobden Court -does it say his occupation? It has been suggested that the Aristocratic family living at Ledbury could be at Ledbury Park or Easton Castle but I am just about to research those too.

Thank you all. Im still working it all out. !

Is the Glamorganshire JJ Adams the OP's individual, given she mentioned them living at 5 station terrace Llanwit Fadre at the time and the school child's father name is James?

The 1939 posted by Jink20 would appear to be the "other John James with his Mother Agnes, ruled out by the OP as the incorrect person.

Don't forget Rose, that his birth was registered in Q2 of 1906. As 6 weeks is allowed in which to register a birth he could have been born as early as mid February.

Also, unfortunately, whilst both days and month are often (but not always) correct in the 1939 register and other documents, the year is sometimes wrong.

2 John J deaths in Hereford which equate to a 1906 birth (if he stayed in that County !)
Unfortunately years not covered by the GRO site to give full name for the J initial.

Shirley- Thanks. I did see that marriage in 1927but I dont know if it is him.will need to get certificate.
Erika - I could not find him on the 1939 Census or a death.

Unfortunately I have no more info about him. He was born in Quarter April/May/ June 1906 so very few John Adams in with birth in that period when I look at the 1939 Census and the only one I thought might match was one in Wiltshire born 8/5/06 and Single but that one does not seem too likely as I understood he stayed around Ledbury and especially if that marriage is him- I cant find him and Edith on the 1939 census either.
All I have been given is that he moved to Ledbury to work in a Big house outside of Ledbury working for an "aristocratic family" around 1921 so was trying to get more info from that. I know I am looking for a"needle in a haystack"
Thanks

ErikaH Report 30 May 2024 14:21

Searching 1921 for a name using 'Ledbury' as a location produces 'no results', but using address search produces plenty.

I have contacted FMP to ask them to rectify this situation..................not holding my breath!
