Random thoughts re Mary's find -

The 1841 census with James Clarke, ginger beer maker, was posted by Alviegal on page 1 (9 July, 19:58 ).
It shows James and Maria with a daughter Eliza, aged 18 months, per image.

The only female Clark(e)/Everson birth on GRO 1839+/-2 is this one, which might be Eliza (Already posted by Alviegal, but worth repeating here):

CLARKE, - EVERSON
GRO Reference: 1840 M Quarter in MARYLEBONE Volume 01 Page 138

There's also a 12-year-old Mary Clarke with them in 1841.

???
Maria Clarke
in the London, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1917
Name: Maria Clarke
Gender: Female
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 11 Oct 1829
Baptism Place: St Marylebone, Westminster, England
Father: James Clarke
Mother: Maria Clarke
Register Type: Parish Registers

But the Mary in 1851 might not be their daughter - she's listed after Eliza although older, and is a servant, as would befit her placing on the census.

The 1851 census with William Wicks shows a son/stepson John aged 14. Why isn't he with James and Maria in 1841?

Possibly John's baptism:

John Clark
in the England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975
Name: John Clark
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 2 May 1836
Baptism Date: 22 May 1836
Baptism Place: All Souls Church, Marylebone, Middlesex, England
Father: James Clark
Mother: Maria Clark
FHL Film Number: 580896

James Clarke and Maria Everson married in the same church.

ArgyllGran I have been doing the same thing today !ol

Mary Clarke , 12 in the 1841 census must be Maria.child born 1840 Clark-Everson

Been looking for John Clark, Born 2/5/1836, Bap 22/5/1836?
Wonder where he had been since birth, still looking lol.. Thank you Mary for finding his marriage, Hells bells 10 children, I dont think there are too many parents that have 10 now all due to birth control.

I do wonder why Maria Wicks is a boarder in 1861, her husband didnt die till 1870 or maybe he was in hospital?. Maybe couldnt afford the rent if her husband was ill and not working.

Why isnt Eliza on the 1851 census?

1871 census Maria is visiting the Sanders family, may follow this up as could be a granddaughter? Just been googling Monthly Nurse which is obsolete now. It was a nurse that stayed with or visited a mother after she had her baby for a month. What a lovely job!!

Thanks ladies , as always youve been brilliant

I think you mean that Eliza, aged 18 months in 1841, is the child registered in 1st quarter 1840. Not Mary.
She could have been born at the end of 1839.

This is the 1870 death you mention, for reference - may or may not be him:

William Wicks

Re 1861, when Maria is a visitor to the Sanders family -

she could well be the monthly nurse for young Percy Sanders aged 3 days, even though the enumerator hasn't written that on the form.

The only death I can find June qtr 1878 but when I have gone back from 1881c its different Mary Ann She was born Charlton Kent and not Dartford. Was married to Henry Stokes on the 1871 census.

Thank you for all your help

At school in 1851, in the home of the Faulkner family in Chelsea, and in 1861 she's a visitor to the Faulkner family.

1871 onwards, she's with her parents until her death in 1894

So - Henry and Mary Ann Stokes married before 1826, when the daughter Lucy on 1841 census was born.

Thank you very much ladies. I have already checked out those names.

Mary Ann Everson married Joseph Stokes and apparently he was born in Farnham Surrey.
This is the only Joseph I can find. I have also tried to find their children and I havent found anything that I can link to Mary Ann and Joseph
The Emma in the 1841 census is Elizabeth Emma Stokes. Both she and Charles born 1832 were christened together on 19th Oct 1834.

It seems to me that the death of Mary Ann Stokes June qtr 1878 is not the Mary Ann I am looking for. The family I am looking for seems to have disappeared!!

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 28 Jul 2020 11:14

I'm confused!

You started this thread asking about Maria Everson 1802, born Dartford, who married James Clark. It seems she later married William Wicks.

Then later you asked about Mary Ann Everson, 1804 Dartford, who married Joseph Stokes.

We've found the Mary Ann Everson, born Charlton c1806, who married Henry Stokes, on censuses 1841-81, but if I'm understanding you properly, this isn't the woman you're looking for.

Which of these women is the one are you looking for, please?
How did you work back to her?
Which of her children is definitely in your tree?
