Hi, I'm searching for birth/parental information for the above and their ancestors.. They were married at King Edward Aberdeenshire on 26 of May 1850. Robert Wood already had a son [also named Robert Wood - born to Ann Davidson [i think], and with Margaret had 2 other children - Margaret Wood [born 1848] and Alexander Sinclair Wood [born 1854]. Margaret Sinclair [farmservants wife]and the 2 oldest children are recorded in the 1851Census living in Lochagan [house] Banffshire.

Any family history, living relatives...would be greatly appreciated.
NB I believe Robert Wood [husband] was born in Aucterless/Turriff Aberdeenshire approx 1821-1826.

Margaret Sinclair was born in Banffshire to Alexander Sinclair and Margaret Sinclair approx 1816.

Thankyou

You need Scotlands People which isn't a subs site I,m afraid

You can search free but need units to view the certs

You probably know this anyway from your searches

Bmds registration though didn't start till 1855 so it's parish records

They don't show fathers names though for marriages

Hi Merryn

Scotlands People Site has a Baptism Record for a Robert Wood baptised 05.06.1824 in Auchterless. Parents listed as James Wood and Elspet Howie.

This could be him. Let me know if you need any further help.

I am actually on Scotlands People and I spent about $30 Australian dollars on a duplicate of the wedding details of Margaret Sinclair and Robert Wood from the Old Parochial Records in a certificate form - which I had already obtained on a free website [or it could have been on Find My Past which I have an ongoing yearly subscription, so it was included], so that was a little frustrating.
I have seem the Baptism record of Robert Wood in Aucterless, with James Wood and Elslpet Howie, but I can't prove either way if this is correct or not. Any ideas?

Interesting that she used her maiden name - had she split from her husband?

His death cert - if he died after 1855 - should include the names of his parents

In Scotland a married women can legally be known by either her maiden surname or her husband's surname. This is still the case today.

In older censuses they were often listed under the maiden name even when living with their husbands. Also on gravestones.

Thanks everyone for your research. This is awesome!!!

The 1851 Census record showing Margaret Sinclair, Robert Wood [child aged 5] and Margaret Wood [child aged 2] is the correct record; very helpful and exciting as it pinpoints the family. The father must have been working somewhere else that night and on a different census household as a visitor.

I am still trying to get hold of the death certificate for Robert Wood [the father not the child] and hoping it will have the parents names on it. If anyone has access to this record I would greatly appreciate it. He died on the 16th of June 1888 in Mount Gambier, South Australia and is buried in Lake Terrace Cemetery there.

Re the child Alexander - your record is correct, born 1852, not 1854. Interestingly, Alexander and Margarets births were registered at the same time in Turriff. I got the OPR and they are consecutive listings - with the correct birth dates. I guess its because Margaret was born out of wedlock, but by the time the listing was made in 1853, the parents were married, so the listing says they were lawfully married!!

This brings me to the birth of Robert Wood [child]. I believe he is the child of Robert Wood and Ann Davidson - unmarried. This may have a kirk session report on it? How can I access the Kirk Sessions to check?

[I think Ann Davidson died later in 1846, as the father ended up with the child]

in 1845 parochial boards took over responsibility for the poor rate which ended the Kirk Session's influence in local matters. Elected parish councils were introduced in 1894 and in 1929 the Kirk Sessions were finally abolished with the introduction of county, district and town councils. Most of these Session records reside in county record offices.

Aberdeen City records

Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives hold several types of records relating to Aberdeen City. The documents range from charters, minutes and accounts, to maps, plans and photographs. Originally, their function was of a practical and administrative nature but many records now constitute a valuable source for the study of all aspects of Aberdeen’s history.
Burgh records

The Archives hold the finest and most complete collection of medieval and early modern burgh records in Scotland. The centre of this collection is an unrivalled series of council registers - or minutes - which date from 1398. These records chronicle the political, social and economic life of the royal burgh. The burgh records include:

Council Minutes from 1398
Guildry Accounts from 1452
Town's Correspondence from 1552
Treasury Accounts from 1559
Registers of Deeds from 1569
Kirk and Bridgework Accounts from 1571
Apprentice Registers from 1622
Register of Burgesses from 1632

The records of the former burghs of Woodside and Old Aberdeen are also held by Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives. City burgh records are held at our Town House office.
School records

While we do not hold individual pupil records, we do have log books and admission registers for various schools in the city. These records are kept at our Old Aberdeen House branch. A list of schools in Aberdeen City, along with Aberdeenshire, Kincardineshire, Morayshire and Banffshire can be found in our Online Catalogue. Please contact our Old Aberdeen House office for further information.
Cemetery records

Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives hold cemetery records for 10 cemeteries in Aberdeen. These records include burial registers, lair registers and other information. These records have been digitised and are being made available through Deceased Online. A full list of the cemetery records we hold can be found on our Online Catalogue under the reference BR, and a more complete guide to these records can be found on our Burial Records page. For records of other cemeteries in Aberdeen please contact Bereavement Services for further information.
Valuation rolls

Valuation rolls have survived for Aberdeen City from 1855. These list the owner of a property, the name of the head tenant, and the rateable value of the property. They survive up to the present date, though domestic properties are not included after 1990. A fee is charged to those using these records for commercial, business or legal purposes (including tenancy checks for discounted purchase of social housing) and for staff searches. Please see our Table of Fees for further information, or contact our Old Aberdeen House branch where these records are held.

Records for Aberdeenshire, Moray, Kincardineshire and Banffshire are also available. Please see our Catalogues page for further information.

Please note that the Valuation Rolls are the property of the Grampian Valuation Joint Board.
Church records

We hold kirk session records for St. Nicholas, St. Clement’s, St. Clement’s Free, Langstane and Greyfriars churches. In addition to matters of church discipline, the records can contain communion rolls, payments to the poor, baptisms, marriages, and some burials. A list of the Church of Scotland records we hold can be found on our Catalogues page. Please note that access to digitised kirk session records for the whole of Scotland can now be accessed free of charge in both searchrooms.

As well as the records of the established church, we hold records for many of the Congregational, Methodist and Episcopalian churches of Aberdeen. Please see our Catalogues page for further information.

The Church of Scotland records held by Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives in our Town House office are held under the Charge and Superintendence of the Keeper of the Records of Scotland. This means that although the records are held by us, ownership of the records remains with the National Records of Scotland.
Burgh register of sasines

The burgh register of sasines records transfers of land rights within the historic Aberdeen burgh boundary and is a valuable source of information. The records begin in 1484 and continue until 1809, after which date the registers can be found at the National Records of Scotland, along with those for the North East counties. The sasine registers are held at our Town House office under the Charge and Superintendence of the Keeper of the Records of Scotland.
Tax lists

The tax lists (or ‘stent rolls’ as they are sometimes known) for the burgh of Aberdeen date back to the 15th Century. The first comprehensive series of property taxation are the Police Commissioners’ rent rolls, which run from 1795 to 1860 and are held at our Town House office.
Photographs

The main collection of photographs that we hold for the city were taken by Aberdeen District Council photographers between 1950 and 1985, although there are some earlier images. A full list of photographs can be found on our Catalogues page, or contact our Town House office for further information.
Deposited records

These are records not created by the City Council or its predecessors, and can include almost anything from family papers to business documents. Collections include the Hall Russell shipbuilding company and NORCO, as well as many others. A list of some of the other deposited records can be found on our Catalogues page.

Kirk Sessions still exist. Each Church of Scotland congregation has one, and they are responsible for the running of that congregation, and keep congregational records.

As Maddie's post (at 13:42) indicates, they were originally irresponsible for wider local matters such as discipline, poor relief, etc.

Unless Robert and Ann were disciplined in some way for their unseemly behaviour, probably the only mention is the baptism record posted above.

Kirk Session records are with the National Archives in Edinburgh - see ref no in my earlier post.

Aberdeenshire Council records are nothing to do with church matters.

Thanks again everyone! I will look into all that info later today after I get home from work. It's 1:25 am in Melbourne Australia where I am, so I really need to get to bed.

My father [Robert Wood born 1940] and I have booked a trip to Scotland from 21st of August for 3 weeks. We are trying to get as much info before we arrive to direct our itinerary - of research centers and of all the places we can track our ancestors as living in - towns, churches, farms... and even hope to find a living relative...we are flying in to Aberdeen and will go from there... assisted by all this fantastic information!!!
