Dea, that report doesn't necessarily mean the John and Helen weren't married. In Scotland, for legal purposes, we married women don't lose our maiden names. My great grandfather was mugged in the 1890s and his wife's statement describes her as Annie McVey or Ross and they were certainly married.

I am not getting very far as I really need a subscription to Scotlandpeople but I was wondering about this family?

1891 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Cart Road, Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland

First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Occupation Birth place
James Campbell Head Married Male 51 1840 Iron Moulder Stirlingshire, Scotland
Mary Campbell Wife Married Female 50 1841 - Renfrewshire, Scotland
Alex Campbell Son Unmarried Male 18 1873 Iron Moulder Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland
James Campbell Son - Male 15 1876 Iron Moulder Stirlingshire, Scotland
***Mary Campbell Adopted Daughter - Female 7 1884 Scholar Stirlingshire, Scotland

I was working on the asumption that Mary could very well have started off with the name Campbell and these people have an 'adopted daughter' with that name of the right age. However, I have been unable to link them up with a possible daughter named Helen ??? so it is probably just a 'red herring' ?

Might be worth looking into though?

It doesn't look as if they were actually 'married' :

; with the option of ten days' imprisonment William Cannon, miner; Thomas Cannon, miner; John Docherty, miner ; and Helen Campbell .or Docherty. all hailing from Burn Row, Slamannan. were placed at the bar a charge committing breach the peace 12th December
16 December 1891 - Falkirk Herald - Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland

This lady was born c1884,probably in Glasgow area.I have her marriage certificate in 1905 to Thomas Devine. She's given as aged 20,with parents given as John Docherty & Helen (nee Campbell).I cannot find her birth with these parents details, nor can I find her parents marriage.(I have found an 1871 entry on Scotlands People for a John & Ellen Campbell,& also one in 1889,but they don't seem to fit 100% ? Struggling with census info too.I can't find all 3 on 1891 or 1901 censuses,& can't find a John & Helen on 1881 I have found a census entry for them stating John born 1855 in Kirkintilloch, with Helen born there too in 1857,but,again,it doesn't seem to fit 100%. I've found a Helen born 1856 in Kirkintilloch,& that could possibly be correct.
Any help much appreciated to help finish off the Brand/Devine side of my family tree.
THANK YOU.
