You need the certificate to see who is named as father of Melville. As his surname is Thomas and mother's maiden name given as Roberts, then because Lilian was married Lilian's husband will be assumed to be the father (even if he was away) unless someone else was named as the father.

Even during the war men got home leave so George could still be the father.

They moved between Wales and Coventry a lot back then.

The birth Dec 1943 is interesting though, Thomas Melville J.

George would have been away at war then, I am wondering if the "J" stands for junior and that Thomas Melville was the father!!
