ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 5 Jun 2018 11:51

As there's no sign of him with Catherine from somewhere between 1871 and 1881, it certainly looks as if they split up.

She's a bit ahead of herself in 1901, calling herself a widow, if the 1907 death for Peter (posted earlier) is the correct one.
But if they hadn't been in touch for years, perhaps she thought he was dead.
Presumably he might as well have been, as far as she was concerned.

He didn't die in Scotland, anyway.

The 1891 and 1901 censuses found earlier for Peter are probably the correct ones.
As already mentioned, in 1891 he's says he's single and born Leeds. But Malyon's explanation is probably correct - he and Catherine had split up, so in effect he was single. Pudsey and Calverley are both very close to Leeds - near enough for census purposes.

If you register with Scotlands People website, and buy a few credits (30 is the minimum you can buy, costing £7.50), you can view the image of the cert - but there's apparently no first name given. It would have been transcribed on SP if there was one.

I wonder how and where she met Peter ?

Catherine Mcphee
in the 1861 Scotland Census
Name: Catherine Mcphee
Age: 17
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1844
Relationship: Daughter
Parent's Name: Catherine Mcphee
Gender: Female
Where born: Colonsay, Argyllshire
Registration Number: 539/2
Registration district: Colonsay and Oronsay
Civil Parish: Colonsay and Oronsay
County: Argyll
Address: 27 Kilchattan
Occupation: Domestic Serv
ED: 1
Household schedule number: 65
LINE: 1
Roll: CSSCT1861_72
Household Members:
Name Age
Catherine Mcphee 60 - crofter's wife
Donald Mcphee 21 - ploughman
Angus Mcphee 19 - agricultural labourer
Catherine Mcphee 17
Ann Calder 28 - dressmaker (she's apparently another daughter)

I know Catherine's marriage cert says her father was a seaman - but he would have been basically a crofter. Crofters usually had (still have) other jobs, to supplement their income.

rather strange, Peter was a labouer in 1861 and a cloth finisher in 1871 so something must have taken him to Scotland :-)
