If the Banns were read only on 2 occasions, maybe the marriage did not happen and they lived common-law. But it is then possible that the marriage took place much later

Often the cause for a marriage not taking place was that one of the spouses had previously been married.

David is shown as 20 on the 1841 and Mary as 25 ............. but ages were rounded DOWN to the nearest 5 on that census, so David could have been between 20 and 24 and Mary between 25 and 29

She could be the one that was already married??????????????
